Description
Two young women with opposing personalities find their lives intertwined by a shared devotion to drawing manga. In a quiet Japanese town, the outgoing and confident Fujino is the star of her elementary school’s class newspaper, known for her funny four-panel comics. When her teacher asks her to give up one of her newspaper slots to a truant classmate named Kyomoto, Fujino initially scoffs at the idea. Kyomoto is a recluse who refuses to come to school, but the artwork she submits is technically brilliant, a stark contrast to Fujino’s more playful style. What begins as a burning rivalry soon transforms as Fujino, forced to acknowledge Kyomoto’s raw talent, starts to see not a competitor, but a kindred spirit. Their eventual meeting sparks an unlikely friendship, and the two spend their middle school years collaborating on a manga together, finding joy and purpose in each other’s company. As they grow, their path diverges when Fujino decides to pursue publication in a major magazine while the more introverted Kyomoto continues to hone her craft at home. The story takes a tragic turn when a senseless act of violence claims the life of Kyomoto, leaving Fujino to grapple with profound grief and guilt, questioning her own artistic path and the very nature of their friendship. The narrative explores how shared passion can forge an unbreakable bond, even in the face of devastating loss. In 2025, it was announced that the acclaimed one-shot manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, would receive a new live-action adaptation directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, scheduled for release in Japan in 2026. This version will translate the poignant story of artistic rivalry, friendship, and tragedy into a live-action format, following the successful anime film adaptation released the previous year. The live-action production is expected to capture the emotional depth and the nuanced relationship between the two protagonists as they navigate the highs of creative collaboration and the lows of unimaginable heartbreak.
