Across several original video animation releases, the young ninja of the Hidden Leaf Village find themselves in situations that range from dangerous missions to lighthearted competitions, all taking place alongside the main events of the series. Set in the fictional world of shinobi where massive villages function as military strongholds, these short films explore additional adventures and alternate realities for characters like the spirited ninja Naruto Uzumaki, his rival Sasuke Uchiha, and their teammate Sakura Haruno.

In one early OVA titled The Search for the Crimson Four-Leaf Clover, Naruto assists Konohamaru, the grandson of the village leader, in a perilous quest. Konohamaru has developed feelings for a girl who is about to move away, and he believes the legendary crimson clover, said to grant a single wish, can make her stay. The two venture into Akagahara, a dangerous area of the village that has previously hosted advanced ninja examinations, with Sasuke reluctantly joining their expedition.

Another OVA, Mission: Protect the Waterfall Village, also known as The Lost Story, presents a more serious conflict. Team 7, consisting of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura under the guidance of their teacher Kakashi Hatake, is assigned to escort a timid ninja named Shibuki back to his home in the Hidden Waterfall Village. Shibuki is the village leader, a title he inherited from his late father, but he struggles with cowardice. After Kakashi is called away on urgent business, the village comes under attack by Suien, a former jonin from the village who now leads a band of rogue ninja. Their target is the Hero's Water, a special substance that can temporarily grant a massive increase in a ninja's power. Naruto must help Shibuki overcome his fears and protect his home from the invaders.

Shifting to a much lighter tone, the OVA Finally a Clash! Jonin vs. Genin!! Indiscriminate Grand Melee Tournament!!, also released as Leaf Sports Festival, is a comedic affair. The entire village holds a large competitive event where participants, regardless of rank, battle to collect the most pendants. The winner earns the right to create a new law that everyone in the village must obey, leading to chaotic and humorous matchups.

One of the most unique entries is Shippu! Konoha Gakuen Den, or Hurricane! Leaf Academy Story, which presents a complete alternate universe. In this setting, the characters are ordinary students in a modern high school. The story follows a new transfer student named Naruto Uzumaki, whose wild ambition is to become the leader of Japan's yakuza rather than Hokage. He immediately establishes a fierce rivalry with the popular Sasuke Uchiha and challenges the school's toughest fighters. The short film is narrated by Sakura, Ino, and Hinata, who observe Naruto's chaotic antics and his surprisingly soft side, including a developing romantic connection with the shy Hinata Hyuga. The alternate world replaces ninja techniques with yo-yo combat and features the school's faculty, including Kakashi as a teacher and Tsunade as the gambling-addicted principal.
