Yuki Mochizuki is a high school freshman and star judo athlete whose only weakness is her embarrassingly messy handwriting. Yukari Oe is a quiet, gentle-natured returnee from Canada who happens to write with surprising grace and precision. Their paths cross at Suzuri High School in Kamakura, where the calligraphy club is on the verge of being disbanded due to a lack of members.

Through a scheme orchestrated by the club's two eccentric senior members, both Yuki and Yukari are maneuvered into joining the struggling club. Yukari, nursing a secret crush on Yuki, reluctantly agrees, while Yuki feels obligated to join after accidentally injuring his arm when she steps in to protect him from bullies. Despite her athletic prowess, Yuki is self-conscious about her poor penmanship, a stark contrast to Yukaris natural talent. Under the guidance of the serious club president, Hino Hiromi, and their teacher, Kageyama Satoshi, they begin the arduous process of mastering the brush.

As they train, the club faces competition from the prestigious Chigusa High School calligraphy club, led by Hino's competitive twin sister. The guidance of a renowned local calligraphy master, Miura Seifu, and later Yukari's own grandmother, Oe Eiko, helps the two freshmen develop rapidly. Yukari discovers a profound connection to Japanese culture through calligraphy, while Yuki steadily overcomes her initial clumsiness, learning that the art form requires a different kind of strength and focus than judo.

Their growing bond is complicated by their individual paths. Yukari must decide whether to confess his feelings to Yuki, who sees him primarily as a friendly rival in calligraphy. A major conflict arises when Yuki is selected as a top candidate for national judo training, placing her at a crossroads. School officials pressure her to abandon calligraphy and dedicate herself entirely to judo. Forced to choose between her established passion for martial arts and her newfound love for calligraphy, Yuki must make a difficult decision about her future while navigating the final days of her first year in the club.
