Description
"Urusei Yatsura: Only You" is a 1983 anime film based on the popular manga series by Rumiko Takahashi. The story centers on Ataru Moroboshi, a perpetually unlucky and lecherous high school student, and Lum, a beautiful alien princess from the planet Oniboshi. The narrative begins when Lum arrives on Earth, claiming Ataru as her husband after he accidentally wins a game of tag against her. This event sets the stage for a chaotic and comedic relationship between the two, as Ataru’s flirtatious nature and Lum’s possessive tendencies create constant friction.

The plot of "Only You" unfolds when Lum’s parents, the rulers of the Oni tribe, decide to arrange a formal marriage ceremony for Lum and Ataru. However, Ataru, still reluctant to commit, attempts to escape the arrangement. His efforts lead to a series of misadventures, including encounters with various alien species and supernatural beings, all of whom complicate the situation further. Meanwhile, Lum remains determined to solidify her bond with Ataru, despite his resistance and the interference of other characters, such as Shinobu, Ataru’s former love interest, and Mendou, a wealthy and arrogant rival.

The film explores themes of love, commitment, and cultural differences through its humorous and often absurd scenarios. Lum’s alien heritage and the Oni tribe’s customs clash with Earth’s traditions, creating a backdrop of cultural misunderstandings and comedic chaos. Ataru’s selfishness and Lum’s unwavering devotion are central to the story, driving both the humor and the emotional core of the narrative. The film maintains a lighthearted tone, balancing slapstick comedy with moments of genuine affection between the characters.

Key characters include Ataru, whose antics and lack of responsibility often serve as the catalyst for the story’s conflicts; Lum, whose fiery personality and deep affection for Ataru provide both comedic and heartfelt moments; and a supporting cast of eccentric figures, such as Lum’s parents, who add to the film’s chaotic energy. The interactions between these characters highlight the series’ signature blend of romance, science fiction, and comedy, making "Only You" a quintessential entry in the "Urusei Yatsura" franchise.
