Description
"Basilisk" is a historical fantasy anime set in 17th-century Japan, during the early Edo period. The story revolves around a bitter feud between two rival ninja clans, the Iga and the Kouga, who have been locked in a centuries-long conflict. The Tokugawa shogunate, seeking to determine the successor to the shogunate, orchestrates a deadly competition between the two clans. Each clan selects ten of their most skilled ninja to engage in a brutal battle to the death, with the winning clan securing the future of their lineage and influence.
The narrative centers on the tragic romance between Gennosuke Kouga and Oboro Iga, the heirs of their respective clans. Despite their love for each other, they are forced to confront the reality of their clans' enmity. Gennosuke, a skilled and honorable warrior, struggles with the moral implications of the conflict, while Oboro, who possesses a unique ability to nullify ninja techniques, is torn between her loyalty to her clan and her feelings for Gennosuke. Their relationship becomes a poignant symbol of the futility and devastation wrought by the feud.
The series delves into the lives and abilities of the selected ninja from both clans, each possessing distinct and often supernatural skills. The Iga clan includes characters like Tenzen Yakushiji, a ruthless and cunning leader, and Hotarubi, a deadly kunoichi with a tragic past. The Kouga clan features figures such as Hyouma Kouga, a blind swordsman with heightened senses, and Okoi, a seductive and manipulative fighter. As the battle unfolds, alliances shift, betrayals occur, and the body count rises, highlighting the personal and collective costs of the conflict.
Themes of loyalty, honor, and the destructive nature of vengeance are explored as the clans clash in increasingly brutal and strategic confrontations. The story builds toward a climactic resolution that underscores the tragic consequences of the feud, leaving both clans irrevocably changed. "Basilisk" combines intense action, intricate character dynamics, and a richly detailed historical backdrop to create a compelling narrative of love and war.

Staffel 1
1Destiny
In 1614 at Sunpu Castle, the retired shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu observes a duel between Kazamachi Shougen of the Kouga clan and Yashamaru of the Iga clan. Ieyasu then declares the longstanding truce between the two rival ninja clans null and orders each to select ten warriors for a death match; the surviving clan will determine the next shogun and rule for a thousand years. Two scrolls bearing the ten names from each side are dispatched. A flashback reveals that the current clan leaders, Ogen of the Iga and Danjou of the Kouga, were once lovers in 1581 before the Kouga attacked the Iga, ending their relationship. In the present, Ogen and Danjou meet and fatally wound each other in a mutual strike; with their last actions, each crosses their own name off the opposing clan's scroll, marking the first casualties. Meanwhile, the heirs of the two clans, Gennosuke of the Kouga and Oboro of the Iga, remain unaware of the decree and continue their plans to marry in the hope of uniting their feuding families. The episode closes with the death of both elders, igniting the war that will force the ten chosen warriors from each side to eliminate one another.
2Last Rendezvous
The Shogun’s decree arrives at both the Kouga and Iga villages, each receiving a scroll listing ten warriors selected for the death match. Gennosuke learns that he is among the chosen Kouga fighters and that his betrothed, Oboro, stands on the opposing side. Oboro’s grandfather, Danjo, commands her to use her mystic eyes against Gennosuke if the two meet on the battlefield. Despite the newly declared war, Gennosuke and Oboro arrange a secret meeting at the bridge where they once swore their love. Danjo discovers the meeting and appears with Iga ninja, demanding Oboro prove her loyalty by killing Gennosuke. Oboro refuses, and Danjo threatens to execute Gennosuke himself. In the ensuing standoff, Oboro activates her eyes but directs the power inward, temporarily blinding herself to avoid harming Gennosuke. The Iga forces withdraw, and Gennosuke carries Oboro to safety, but the act deepens the rift between the clans. The Kouga elder, Jubei, responds by mobilizing his warriors, formally initiating the conflict. With both sides now committed to combat and the lovers separated by duty, the first bloodshed becomes imminent.
3The Onslaught of War
Yakushiji Tenzen receives the Iga copy of the succession scroll and decides to conceal its contents from Oboro. He leads the Iga to ambush a Kouga palanquin, which contains the limbless Jimushi Jubei. Tenzen sends the rest of his group to target Kazamachi Shougen while he interrogates Jubei. Jubei catches Tenzen off guard by stabbing him with a spear head held in his throat and wielded with his tongue, leaving Tenzen seemingly dead. Hotarubi, Nenki Mino, Yashamaru, and Rousai Azuki ambush Shougen to seize his scroll, but Shougen traps them with his sticky phlegm. Hotarubi summons her glowing pink butterflies, creating a distraction that allows Nenki to wound Shougen. Shougen throws the scroll to Jubei, who flees with it across the ground. Enraged over Yashamaru’s possible injury, Hotarubi stabs Shougen repeatedly until he dies. Jubei escapes the pursuing Iga but encounters Tenzen, who survived the first attack and kills him with a prepared counter. Tenzen retrieves both scrolls and burns the Kouga copy to prevent the Kouga clan from learning the truce has ended. Gennosuke, Oboro, Udono Josuke, and Akeginu arrive together at the Iga village of Tsubagakure, where Gennosuke notices the Iga elder Ogen’s hawk watching him intently.
4The Horned Owl
Gennosuke and Jousuke feast with the Iga clan at Tsubagakure. Gennosuke senses tension in the room but remains unaware that the Shogun has annulled the truce between the clans. Oboro deflects a question about salt from Akaho, and the couple performs a song and dance to ease the gathering. That night, Akeginu locks Jousuke in a room and prepares to kill him. Jousuke escapes using his rubber body and confronts her outside. Akeginu proposes a ninpou battle, releasing a blood mist and striking Jousuke, but his rubber body absorbs the blow. Oboro interrupts the fight and separates them. Gennosuke sits alone and detects an Iga ninja observing him with hostile intent. Outside, Oboro discovers Jingorou stalking Gennosuke in his semi-liquid form. She breaks Jingorou’s ninpou with her eyes and forbids Akeginu from aiding him as punishment. Jingorou crawls to a waterfall where Jousuke washes blood from his clothes. Jousuke interrogates Jingorou, who reveals that the truce has ended and the clans must destroy each other. Jingorou attacks Jousuke, who takes a deep breath to avoid sinking, allowing Jingorou to enter his body through his mouth. Jingorou emerges from Jousuke’s mouth, leaving Jousuke dead in the water.
5The Surprise Attack
At the Kouga Manjidani compound,Okoi and Kisaragi Saemon express concern over Gennosuke’s absence while awaiting the return of their comrades from Sunpu. Muroga Hyouma, Kagerou, and Kasumi Gyoubu discuss the implications of Gennosuke’s relationship with Oboro and send Okoi to the Iga Tsubagakure to gather information. Meanwhile, Yakushiji Tenzen leads Hotarubi, Mino Nenki, Iga Koshirou, and Azuki Rousai into Kouga territory with the intent to eliminate the remaining ten Kouga ninja listed on the scroll. The Iga group enters the Kouga stronghold but the residents discover them, leading to a confrontation. Heavily outnumbered, the five Iga ninja engage the surrounding Kouga forces and kill numerous warriors in the ensuing battle. Hyouma intervenes directly, halting the fighting and compelling the Iga to withdraw after an exchange of words. Concerned about Udono Jousuke’s disappearance, Gennosuke requests that a messenger be sent from the Iga village to the Kouga Manjidani to verify his wellbeing. The episode ends with Gennosuke still unaware of the war’s escalation while the Iga raiders retreat, carrying with them knowledge of Kouga defenses.
6Longing in the Rain
The Iga clan members encounter Okoi of the Kouga Ten on their return to Tsubagakure. Nenki uses his hair and bo staff to knock her unconscious after she attempts to flee. Tenzen decides to keep Okoi as a hostage rather than killing her immediately. Hyouma suspects the truce has ended following the Iga raid on the Kouga village and dispatches Gyoubu and Saemon to trail the Iga. Yashamaru returns from Sunpu carrying the scroll that lists the ten Kouga and ten Iga names marked for death. Saemon pretends to be Tenzen and approaches Yashamaru, who reveals the truce annulment and the contents of the scroll. Saemon drops his disguise and Yashamaru attacks him. Gyoubu, hidden inside a wall, catches Yashamaru and chokes him to death. One of Hotarubi’s butterflies observes Yashamaru’s death. Saemon takes Yashamaru’s face to infiltrate the Iga village. The Iga return to Tsubagakure with Okoi as their prisoner. Gennosuke and Oboro remain unaware of the escalating conflict that now surrounds them. With Saemon disguised as Yashamaru approaching Iga territory and the Kouga learning of their ally’s death, the fragile separation between the two lovers and their warring clans tightens toward inevitable collision.
7The Bloodsucking Seductress
In the Iga salt storehouse,Rōsai Azuki interrogates the captive Okoi for Kouga secrets. He touches her shoulder and finds his hand stuck to her skin. Okoi activates her blood-sucking ability and drains Rōsai completely, killing him and reducing his body to a dried husk. She vomits the blood and resolves to escape the Iga stronghold. Outside the village, Gyōbu Kasumi and Saemon Kisaragi (disguised as Yashamaru) arrive to infiltrate. Saemon goes ahead alone. Hotarubi spots him and attacks with throwing knives, but she stops upon recognizing Yashamaru’s appearance. She embraces him, relieved at his return, and her snake bites his finger; she sucks out the venom. Hotarubi explains that Yashamaru’s changed hair made her hesitate, and she reveals that Danjō Kōga is likely dead and that she personally killed Shōgen Kazamachi. Meanwhile, Jingorō Amayo enters the salt storehouse looking for Rōsai. Okoi claims a Kouga woman violated by an Iga cannot live and asks him to kill her. Believing Rōsai assaulted her, Jingorō strips to do the same. He touches Okoi, and she traps him with her blood-sucking ability, beginning to drain him. Kōshirō summons Oboro on Tenzen’s orders. As she leaves, Gennosuke observes Kōshirō’s lingering look at her. Tenzen meets Oboro and announces that the Anti-War Pact between the Iga and Kouga has been nullified, leaving her stunned.
8Cage of Blood
In the salt store,Okoi drains Rousai's blood, leaving him dead. Jingorou enters and attacks Okoi, but she begins draining him as well; he escapes by reverting to a liquid form and melting into salt. Nenki arrives and kills Okoi by piercing her body with his sharpened hair. Saemon, still disguised as Yashamaru, arrives with Hotarubi. Okoi revives briefly with her brother's technique, reveals she killed Rousai, and tells him where she hid the scroll. Saemon retrieves the scroll, but Oboro enters the salt store. Her mystic eyes inadvertently break Saemon's disguise. Nenki attacks Saemon, who throws salt into Nenki's eyes, blinding him. Nenki's counterattack strikes Hotarubi instead. Gyoubu emerges from the ground, seizes the scroll, and escapes. Oboro finds Okoi's dead body. Gennosuke receives the scroll and reads it, learning the truce between the clans has ended. The remaining Iga warriors gather outside Gennosuke's room. Gennosuke stands with Saemon and Gyoubu inside, the three surviving Kouga ninja surrounded by the Iga forces.
9Farewell
Gennosuke of the Kōga reads the secret scroll and confirms with Saemon that Okoi has died, making clear the truce has collapsed. The Iga, led by Tenzen, surround Gennosuke and his two companions. Five Iga ninja charge at Gennosuke, but his dōjutsu eye technique forces them to turn their weapons on each other, killing themselves. Gennosuke walks past the remaining Iga and ignores Oboro, who has arrived on the scene. Tenzen orders Koshirō to attack, believing his whirlwind technique can counter Gennosuke’s eyes. Koshirō begins his attack, but Oboro steps in and pleads with him to stop. When Koshirō resumes his technique and opens his eyes, Gennosuke’s dōjutsu reflects the attack back, destroying Koshirō’s eyesight. Gennosuke departs without responding to Oboro’s calls. The next morning, Tenzen informs Oboro that three Iga are dead and Koshirō is now blind. He demands she kill Gennosuke herself. Oboro refuses, stating she does not understand the hatred between the clans. Tenzen and the other Iga explain the historical grudge: during Oda Nobunaga’s attack on Iga, the Kōga pursued and killed fleeing Iga ninja, and Danjō Kōga nearly killed Ogen. Tenzen presses her again, and Oboro asks for time to consider. Gennosuke returns to the Kōga village, where the others question the absence of Okoi and Jōsuke. Oboro later returns to Tenzen carrying a jar; she has used its contents to seal her own eyes shut, removing her ability to counter Gennosuke’s technique and refusing to participate in the war.
10Divine Mandate
At Sunpu Castle,Lord Ieyasu Tokugawa and his retainers review the casualty reports from the first two days of the Iga-Kouga war. Hattori Kyōhachirō delivers a detailed account, beginning with the mutual killing of the clan leaders Danjō Kōga and Ogen, whose bodies he left embraced in death. He recounts the fatal game between Jōsuke Udono and Rōsai Azuki, which Gennosuke and Oboro halted before either knew the truce had ended. Kyōhachirō explains how the Iga subsequently killed Shōgen Kazamachi and Jūbei Jimushi and burned the Kouga clan’s scroll, leaving Gennosuke’s clan unaware of the war for its opening phase. The council notes that the Kouga’s ignorance accounts for their higher initial losses. The discussion shifts to the parallel succession conflict in Edo, where the wet nurse Ofuku backs the grandson Takechiyo while Lady Oeyo supports Kunichiyo, their rivalry already marked by poisonings and assassination attempts. Ieyasu reveals he has dispatched the monk Tenkai to manage the situation in Edo. A new report arrives detailing the deaths of Okoi, Yashamaru, and Rōsai, and Kyōhachirō reads how Gennosuke finally learned of the war through the use of his Doujutsu. With the Kouga now fully aware, the Iga lead seven survivors to the Kouga’s five. Kyōhachirō requests permission to observe the final stages personally and departs. Ieyasu remarks that the twenty elite ninja might have proven more useful for the coming campaign against Osaka. The episode closes with the two clans’ surviving members preparing to continue the bloodshed, now with both sides knowing the stakes.
11On Their Own
Gennosuke sends a scroll to the Iga Tsubagakure along with a letter declaring his intention to avoid battle. He announces the Kouga will travel to Sunpu to appeal directly to the retired shogun and Hattori Hanzo to halt the succession war. Gennosuke warns that any attack on his group will be met with full retaliation. Tenzen reads the message and immediately accepts the challenge, dispatching Nenki and Hotarubi to scout the Kouga position. The Kouga wait out a rainstorm at Sekiyado when Nenki and Hotarubi locate them. Nenki’s snake spits a blinding potion into Gennosuke’s eyes, permanently sealing his sight. Nenki remains behind to engage the Kouga while Hotarubi flees to report to Tenzen. Hyouma activates his Doujutsu, forcing Nenki to turn his blade on himself and die by his own hand. Saemon pursues Hotarubi, catches her, and wounds her before she escapes. The Kouga now travel without their leader’s eyesight, and Tenzen’s forces prepare to close in after learning their location.
12Remembrance
The Iga ninja wait out the rain, their pursuit of the Kouga temporarily stalled. Oboro reflects on past moments with Gennosuke, remembering their time together before the conflict consumed them. Hotarubi evades Saemon by deploying decoy butterflies, forcing him to abandon the chase. Saemon returns to Sekiyado and discovers Nenki’s corpse, his anger growing as he realizes his chance for revenge against his sister’s killer has slipped away. Koshirou, struggling with his blindness and the weight of the war, nearly kills Akeginu when she approaches to comfort him. Struggling to return to her allies, Hotarubia recalls happier memories of training with Yashamaru during their youth. She reaches a broken suspension bridge, her path blocked and her strength fading. Nenki appears on the trail, claiming he has already killed Gennosuke and the rest of the Kouga, trapping Hotarubi between his words and her own desperate situation.
13A Dawn of Slaughter
The truce between the Kouga and Iga clans expires at dawn, activating the shogun’s decree that the two heirs must battle until one clan is annihilated. Oboro, the Iga heir, faces mounting pressure from her clan elders to kill Gennosuke, the Kouga heir and her beloved. Gennosuke attempts to reach Oboro alone at the bridge to negotiate a way to avoid the conflict. The Iga elders ambush Gennosuke, but Oboro uses her Mystic Eyes of the Abyss to nullify his Shadowless Strike technique, leaving him defenseless. Oboro’s action fulfills her clan’s demand but traps her between her loyalty to the Iga and her love for Gennosuke. With Gennosuke’s powers sealed, the Iga ninja launch a full assault on the Kouga. The Kouga, led by the injured Gennosuke, retaliate with their own lethal arts, resulting in immediate casualties on both sides. The battle dissolves the pretense of negotiation and forces every member of both clans into direct combat. Oboro and Gennosuke face each other amid the slaughter, each bearing the weight of their respective clan’s survival. The episode concludes with the decimation of several key warriors, solidifying the war’s irreversible escalation. The destruction of the truce leaves the two lovers as the central obstacles to each clan’s victory, setting the stage for a series of duels that will decide the survival of both houses.
14A Fatal Cry
Tenzen captures Gennosuke and prepares to execute him, aiming to secure victory for the Iga clan. Oboro, watching from concealment, unleashes her Dragonfly Cry to shatter Tenzen’s concentration. The piercing sound disrupts Tenzen’s grip and frees Gennosuke. Tenzen’s body convulses under the sonic assault, leaving him defenseless. Oboro’s own body exacts a toll: her eyes lose their sight permanently as the cry consumes her vision. Gennosuke seizes the moment and drives a fatal strike into Tenzen. The Iga ninja collapses, ending his campaign against the Kouga leader. With Tenzen dead, the immediate danger to Gennosuke and Oboro ceases. Oboro’s blindness, however, leaves her dependent on Gennosuke and shifts the practical strength between the two clans. Gennosuke now must defend her while the blood feud mandates further confrontations. Survivors from both sides reassess their positions, knowing the conflict still demands more deaths.
15Reckoning
The Iga clan’s ship becomes a trap when Tenzen, believed dead, resurfaces to confront Gyobu. Gyobu recalls his father’s death at Iga hands, revealing his long-standing vendetta against the clan. During the duel, Gyobu disarms Tenzen and seizes his sword, gaining the upper hand. A young boy’s father reaches for a dropped flute, and Gyobu accidentally kills the man with a slash, shocking the child. Akeginu recovers and releases a blood mist, coating Gyobu and allowing Tenzen to track his movements. Tenzen retrieves his blade and drives it through Gyobu, pinning him to a wall. With Gyobu dead, Tenzen updates the ninja roster, crossing off five names and leaving four survivors on each side. The Kōga travelers discover Gyobu’s corpse embedded in a wall panel washed ashore. Gennosuke orders the wall set adrift as a burial at sea, then gazes at the sky, seeing the fallen Kōga faces before whispering Oboro’s name.
17Wandering Hearts
Saemon and Kagerou intercept a hawk carrying a scroll from Ogen, forcing the bird to drop its message. Gennosuke and Hyouma encounter Tenzen on the road. Gennosuke proposes a truce until he can speak with the retired shogun, but Tenzen refuses. Confident in facing two blind men, Tenzen attacks. Hyouma reveals he also possesses a doujutsu; he opens his eyes and forces Tenzen to stab himself to death. At Chiryu on the Tokaido Road, Akeginu bathes Oboro, attempting to cleanse her of the violation by Tenzen. Koshirou, left behind by Tenzen earlier, wanders alone through the night. He eventually catches up to Gennosuke, Kagerou, and Hyouma. The three Kouga accept Koshirou into their company. Gennosuke reads the intercepted scroll, learning the full scope of the war's origin and the wager that set the clans against each other. The revelation leaves the Kouga heirs to confront the political machinations that demand their complete annihilation.
18Episode 18
Nenki and Koshirō imprison Gennosuke and Oboro in a small hut, trapping them to await judgment. Koshirō accuses Gennosuke of murdering Iga allies, but Gennosuke denies responsibility for the attacks. Nenki proposes a duel between Gennosuke and Koshirō to resolve the dispute, insisting the fight will determine the truth. Gennosuke refuses to fight, arguing that killing Koshirō would only deepen the bloodshed between the clans. Koshirō threatens to kill Oboro if Gennosuke does not comply, forcing Gennosuke to accept the duel. The fight begins with Gennosuke restraining himself, attempting only to disarm his opponent without inflicting fatal harm. Koshirō overpowers Gennosuke and prepares to deliver the killing blow, but Oboro activates her mystic eyes. Her power neutralizes Koshirō’s technique and causes him to collapse, killing him instantly. Nenki witnesses Koshirō’s death and unleashes his fury, breaking the hut apart to pursue Gennosuke and Oboro. Gennosuke carries Oboro as they flee into the wilderness, knowing Nenki’s wrath now makes survival nearly impossible.
20Fallen Flower
Gennosuke confronts Ogen, who reveals the true nature of the truce as a ruse to eliminate both clans. Ogen stabs herself, framing Gennosuke for her death and solidifying the Kouga’s resolve to fight. Hotarubi attempts to use her illusions to avenge her master, Ogen. She captures Gennosuke but hesitates when he shows no fear. Oboro arrives and exposes Hotarubi’s illusions, leaving her vulnerable. Gennosuke spares Hotarubi’s life, stating his intent to end the bloodshed through peace. The Iga, driven by grief and rage, reject any notion of truce and pledge to kill the Kouga. Oboro chooses to stand with Gennosuke, severing her ties with the Iga. Akeginu, loyal to Oboro, follows her, creating a rift within the Iga ranks. The episode concludes with the Kouga preparing for the final assault as the Iga fortify their defenses, setting the stage for a direct confrontation between Gennosuke and his former allies.
21With All Her Heart
At Ofuku’s residence, retainers test Saemon’s claimed ability to return from the dead by stabbing him with a spear. Saemon realizes Tenzen died earlier and came back, meaning the retainer before him was Tenzen in disguise. Before Saemon can counter, the retainers stab him to death. Kagero lies to Gennosuke, telling him she killed Oboro and confessing her wish to remain at his side. Tenzen sets a trap for Kagero at Ofuku’s base in the Hamamatsu Inns. Unaware of Saemon’s death, Kagero arrives and assumes the man waiting is Saemon in disguise. Tenzen proposes they make love to convince the Kouga clan she has defected. Kagero suspects he is the real Tenzen and kills him with her poisonous kiss, then snaps his neck. The retainers rush in to kill Kagero, but Ofuku orders Oboro to do it instead. Oboro refuses to kill Kagero, arguing she is more valuable as bait to lure Gennosuke into the open. Kagero’s failed assassination attempt leaves her captured rather than dead, and Tenzen’s survival through deception eliminates another Kouga warrior. Oboro’s decision to preserve Kagero as a hostage sets the stage for a direct confrontation between her and Gennosuke.
22The Haunted
Kagerō escapes her captors during the night and finds Oboro’s room, intending to kill her. Tenzen intercepts Kagerō before she can strike and subdues her. The next morning, Oboro issues a public challenge in Kakegawa, hoping to draw Gennosuke out of hiding and retrieve the war scroll. That night, Tenzen ties Kagerō to a pole and tortures her by firing needles into her stomach, carving the word “Iga” into her skin with poisoned needles. Oboro attempts to stop the torture, but Tenzen drags her to the center of the room and announces his intent to rape her in front of Kagerō. He plans to use Oboro’s mystic eyes to neutralize Kagerō’s poison, which releases only when she becomes aroused. Gennosuke arrives before Tenzen can act, freeing Kagerō and confronting his resurrected enemy. Despite being blinded, Gennosuke engages Tenzen in a sword fight, sustaining multiple wounds as Tenzen’s body rapidly heals. During the duel, Tenzen confesses that he manipulated events during the Tenshō Iga War to prevent the Iga and Kōga clans from uniting under the peace pact forged by their previous leaders. He admits he deliberately perpetuated the century-old hatred between the two clans. Gennosuke now faces an enemy whose regenerative abilities and long-hidden treachery pose a direct threat to both his life and the fragile remnants of both clans.
24Requiem
At Hattori Hanzo's residence ten days after the war's start,Gennosuke stands barely able to maintain his footing. Oboro faces him for the final duel with little concern for which clan claims victory. Both recall their time together before the conflict consumed their clans. Hattori Kyohachiro apologizes to Oboro for the slaughter the succession dispute caused. Oboro requests Kyohachiro keep Gennosuke's flute after the duel concludes. Ofuku attempts to distance herself from involvement but remains under suspicion. Oboro turns her sword on herself after telling Gennosuke she loves him. Gennosuke takes the succession scroll and declares Oboro and the Iga the victors. He carries Oboro's body into the river where he ends his own life. The deaths of both heirs leave the succession dispute resolved without either clan claiming a living victor.
