Description
Kaoru Ichijo is a police inspector who serves as the leading operative of the Science Police force, a special unit formed to investigate and combat the Grongi, the ancient monsters that have been resurrected in the present day. He is first introduced as a detective belonging to the Nagano Prefectural Police before being transferred to the joint investigation headquarters in Tokyo. Born on April 18, 1974, Ichijo is a young man in his mid-twenties during the events of the story. His career in law enforcement was directly inspired by a tragedy from his childhood. On his tenth birthday, his father, who was also a police officer, drowned while attempting to rescue people who had fallen into a river. This loss instilled in Ichijo a profound sense of duty and a desire to follow in his father's footsteps as a model policeman. Following his father's death, Ichijo maintained a tradition of returning home on his birthday to spend time with his mother, a nurse who often works on holidays.
In terms of personality, Ichijo is a dedicated and exceptionally hard-working individual who consistently puts his job and duty above his personal life. He is known for having a serious and often stern demeanor, rarely smiling, which makes his occasional smiles all the more surprising to those around him. Despite this sober exterior, he is described as being friendly and insightful. His commitment to justice is absolute, and he believes firmly in doing the right thing, even if it requires bending police regulations. For instance, he does not hesitate to provide Yusuke Godai, the protagonist who transforms into Kuuga, with police equipment and forensic research to aid in the fight against the Grongi. He also personally participates in dangerous combat situations, utilizing special bullets and rifles developed by the Science Police Research Institute, often sustaining serious injuries in the line of fire without regard for his own safety.
Ichijo's primary role in the story is that of Yusuke Godai's most trusted ally and the main liaison between Kuuga and the police force. Initially, he is conflicted about allowing a civilian like Yusuke to fight the unidentified lifeforms, believing it is the police's responsibility to protect citizens. However, after witnessing Yusuke's conviction and effectiveness as Kuuga, Ichijo becomes his staunchest supporter and partner from the fourth episode onward. He provides Yusuke with essential support, famously lending him his own pistol and facilitating the use of the prototype TryChaser 2000 police motorcycle. As the series progresses, Ichijo is responsible for informing the rest of the joint investigation headquarters of Yusuke's true identity, fully integrating him as an official ally. The relationship between the serious detective and the adventurous Yusuke evolves into a deep and powerful friendship built on mutual trust and respect. In the final confrontation, Ichijo is tasked with an unthinkable act: to destroy the Arcle belt's Amadam stone on Yusuke's command, effectively asking for the heavy promise to kill his friend if Kuuga loses control of his Ultimate Form. This moment solidifies the immense trust and burden they share.
Throughout the narrative, Ichijo demonstrates notable development. He transforms from a by-the-book officer skeptical of civilian involvement to a man willing to break rules and risk his career to support a friend he believes in. He also shows immense personal courage, becoming one of the few humans to directly face powerful Grongi like the female warrior Ra-Baruba-De, eventually defeating her with a specialized enhanced nerve insulation bullet. While Ichijo does not possess superhuman powers like Kuuga, he is a highly capable and resourceful police officer. His notable abilities include exceptional marksmanship and a high tolerance for physical punishment, as he continues to return to the front lines even when severely wounded. He also plays a key role in supporting Kuuga by providing the armored machine Gouram, which can attach to Yusuke's motorcycles for enhanced combat capabilities. After the Grongi threat is finally defeated, Ichijo returns to his duties with the Nagano Prefectural Police.
