Description
In Kamen Rider Agito, the character known as G3 refers not to a single individual but to a powered armor system and the various police officers who operate it. The most prominent and defining wearer of the G3 armor is Makoto Hikawa, a police officer whose personal journey is deeply intertwined with the suit's legacy. Hikawa is a young man of earnest and sincere demeanor, often described as clumsy or awkward in social situations, yet he possesses an unwavering sense of justice and a remarkable capacity for bravery. He is not a superhuman or a chosen warrior but a regular human being who willingly steps into combat against monstrous beings known as the Unknown, or Lords, to protect the innocent.

The G3 system itself was developed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's SAUL unit, with the brilliant and headstrong scientist Sumiko Ozawa as its creator. The suit was originally designed to combat the Gurongi, a previous wave of unidentified lifeforms, and its design was modeled after the warrior known as Unidentified Lifeform No. 4, who was Kamen Rider Kuuga. Because of this origin, the G3 armor lacks the organic or mystical powers of other warriors like Agito or Gills, relying entirely on its artificial technology and the physical endurance of its operator. The suit is armed with an array of formidable weaponry, including the GM-01 Scorpion assault rifle, the GG-02 Salamander grenade launcher, and the GS-03 Destroyer, a high-frequency vibrating blade. Despite this arsenal, the initial G3 unit is consistently outmatched by the Unknown, forcing its wearer to rely on strategy and determination to survive.

Hikawa’s motivation to fight is rooted in his professional duty as a police officer and a personal code of honor. He is deeply inspired by the mysterious and powerful Kamen Rider Agito, whom he frequently witnesses saving people, and he considers this enigmatic warrior a respected ally, even before learning his true identity. His role in the story is that of the human counterweight to the escalating superhuman conflict. While Shouichi Tsugami (Agito) and Ryo Ashihara (Gills) struggle with their evolving and often painful powers, Hikawa represents the organized, if underpowered, response of humanity. He is the first to theorize that the Unknown are targeting humans with developing psychic powers, a hypothesis often dismissed by his superiors. This places him in a unique position as a detective, trying to solve the pattern of the monsters' attacks while also being the primary line of defense.

Hikawa's key relationships define his character arc. His partnership with his commander, Sumiko Ozawa, is one of mutual respect; she is a demanding genius who trusts his piloting abilities, and he is the only one who can consistently handle the physical strain of the G3 system. He has a professional rivalry with Toru Hojo, a cynical and ambitious detective who believes he is better suited to operate the G3 unit and frequently schemes against Hikawa. However, Hikawa’s most significant relationship is with Shouichi Tsugami. He holds Agito in such high esteem that when he eventually discovers Shouichi is the man inside the armor, he struggles to accept it, having separated the hero from the person in his mind. This admiration is mutual, as Agito has saved Hikawa on numerous occasions, and their alliance becomes a cornerstone of the fight against the Unknown.

Throughout the series, Hikawa experiences significant development, moving from a well-meaning but often ineffective fighter to a more capable and resourceful warrior. Realizing the original G3 system is insufficient, Ozawa develops the upgraded G3-X (Generation 3 eXtension) suit. This new armor is more powerful, features a support AI to assist in combat, and is equipped with heavier weapons like the GX-05 Kerberos gatling gun. The G3-X represents a major leap in human technology, allowing Hikawa to fight more effectively alongside Agito. Later in the story, Hikawa begins to suffer from deteriorating eyesight, a serious physical consequence of his repeated battles, which threatens his ability to continue as an operator. He must confront his own mortality and the limits of his purely human body, yet he continues to fight, embodying the theme that humanity's spirit and courage are weapons in their own right. His perseverance ultimately proves invaluable in the final confrontations, establishing that a normal human, through grit and technology, can stand alongside gods and monsters.
