Description
Masaru Asou is the primary protagonist of the 1993 film Kamen Rider ZO. Originally the laboratory assistant of geneticist Doctor Mochizuki, he was forcibly subjected to an experiment related to the creation of a Neo-Lifeform, which transformed him into a grasshopper-like cyborg designated as Kamen Rider ZO. Horrified by his transformation, he fled into the mountains and entered a self-induced coma. He remained in this dormant state for two years until he was awakened by a telepathic call linked to the melody of a pocket watch, which instilled in him an unconscious compulsion to protect Hiroshi Mochizuki, the young son of the doctor. Upon awakening, he seeks to understand his transformation and quickly steps into the role of a protector when the boy is threatened by the monstrous Neo-Lifeform known as Doras.

In terms of personality, Masaru is presented as a somewhat reticent and introspective individual in the film, grappling with the trauma of his forced cybernization and the loss of his humanity. Despite this internal turmoil, he exhibits a calm and determined pragmatism when faced with danger, driven by a deep-seated sense of duty to shield the innocent from the consequences of his creator's misguided experiments. He is not overtly expressive, but his actions demonstrate a strong protective instinct, particularly towards Hiroshi. His motivations evolve from a passive urge to protect to an active and self-sacrificing commitment to stopping the Neo-Lifeform, ultimately coming to terms with his non-human nature and embracing his role as a guardian.

His key relationship is with Hiroshi Mochizuki, whom he views as a charge to be protected at all costs. Initially a source of fear for the boy, Masaru gradually earns Hiroshi's trust, with the boy eventually calling him his brother. He also maintains a complex relationship with Doctor Mochizuki, who is both his creator and the source of his suffering. While he initially feels anger and betrayal over being used as an experiment, he eventually comes to forgive the doctor, understanding his tragic flaws. Over the course of the story, Masaru develops from a victim of unethical science into a self-sacrificing guardian. His journey involves accepting what he has become and using his newfound abilities to fulfill a heroic purpose.

As Kamen Rider ZO, Masaru possesses enhanced physical attributes including superhuman strength and agility, which allow him to leap great distances and engage in high-speed combat. He can transform into a powerful, armored grasshopper-like form to fight biological threats. His primary weapon is his high-performance motorcycle, the Z-Bringer, which can reach speeds of up to 1,300 kilometers per hour. His signature finishing techniques include the ZO Kick and the Z-Bringer Attack. He also demonstrates acute senses, such as enhanced hearing, to track threats over long distances.
