Description
Professor Mochizuki, also referred to as Doctor Mochizuki, is a geneticist in the story of Kamen Rider ZO and the central figure behind both the hero and the villain of the tale. He is the father of a young boy named Hiroshi Mochizuki, the son of the inventor Seikichi Mochizuki, and the creator of the grasshopper-themed warrior Kamen Rider ZO as well as the living creature known as the Neo-Lifeform.

His background is defined by advanced scientific work in genetic engineering. He set out to create what he called the perfect lifeform, a being stronger and more complete than ordinary humans and free from the weaknesses of human emotion. This ambition was so consuming that he carried out invasive experiments on his own laboratory assistant, Masaru Aso, using surgery to implant grasshopper genes into his body and turning him into the first test subject of the project. Before these events, he is shown to have been a gentle and affectionate parent, having given his son a musical pocket watch and telling him that listening to music brings a kind and gentle feeling. As his research progressed, however, his scientific ambition increasingly came to dominate his judgment, and the life he created eventually grew beyond his control.

His motivations shift over the course of the story. In the beginning, he is driven by the ideal of producing a perfect, emotionless organism. When the Neo-Lifeform develops its own will and begins acting independently, he becomes afraid of it and refuses its demand to be given a body that could move freely. After the creature takes Hiroshi captive in order to force him to continue its evolution, his main concern becomes the safety of his son. It is at this point that he reaches out to Masaru, who has been missing and unconscious, sending telepathic messages through grasshoppers to awaken him and draw him back to protect Hiroshi.

His role in the story is that of the originating cause of the central conflict, since both the protective hero and the threatening monster are results of his experiments. For much of the film he is imprisoned, integrated against his will into machinery connected to the pool of living fluid that sustains the Neo-Lifeform, leaving him able to observe and communicate but not to act freely. In the final confrontation, the Neo-Lifeform absorbs Kamen Rider ZO into itself and takes on a strengthened red form, then threatens Hiroshi's life to force the professor to complete the evolution. Mochizuki resists rather than comply, and his defiance prompts the creature to drag him out of the machinery. In his last moments, he damages the pool that serves as the Neo-Lifeform's source of life, creating the opening that allows ZO to free himself and destroy the creature. Because his body can no longer survive without the machinery that had been keeping him alive, he dies once he has seen that his son is safe.

His key relationships shape much of the story. He shares a deep bond with his son Hiroshi, a boy who misses the father who disappeared and longs to be reunited with him. His relationship with Masaru Aso is complicated, as he used Masaru as a test subject in his pursuit of the perfect lifeform, and Masaru, though resentful of what was done to him, eventually comes to forgive him. The Neo-Lifeform regards the professor as its father as well, calling him papa and craving his affection even as it defies him, imprisons him, and takes on the appearance of a boy resembling Hiroshi. His own father, Seikichi, cares for Hiroshi during his absence and provides the family with a degree of stability.

His development follows a path from ambitious researcher to regretful parent. He begins as a caring father whose dedication to his work gradually overtakes his judgment, leading him to create beings he cannot fully control. When the consequences of his actions threaten his son, he accepts responsibility for what he has made and chooses to sacrifice himself to stop it, finding peace only after confirming that his child is out of danger.

His notable abilities are scientific rather than physical. He is a highly capable geneticist and surgeon, able to create modified humans and entirely new lifeforms such as Kamen Rider ZO and the Neo-Lifeform. He also demonstrates the ability to send telepathic messages through grasshoppers, which he uses to awaken Masaru and guide him to Hiroshi's side. He possesses no significant combat skill, and his most decisive contribution comes at the end, when he uses his knowledge of the creature he created to destroy its life source and allow the hero to prevail.
