Description
Berry is a supporting character from the 1994 film Kamen Rider J. Berry is a large, intelligent mutant grasshopper who serves as a guide and companion to the protagonist, Kouji Segawa, the transformed Kamen Rider J. Berry acts on behalf of the Earth Spirits, also known as the Chikūjin, a race of beings who cannot easily operate on the surface due to their sensitivity to light.

In terms of appearance, Berry resembles a rice grasshopper, approximately fifteen to thirty centimeters in length, with a slightly rounded, whitish body that distinguishes it from ordinary insects. Unlike a normal grasshopper, Berry has the ability to speak human languages fluently and possesses a bright, lively personality. Berry often takes on the role of an explainer or commentator, offering advice to Kouji and helping him understand the nature of the threat posed by the alien Fog Mother and her children. Berry's primary motivation is the protection of the Earth, and it loyally supports Kouji in his mission to stop the Fog invasion.

Throughout the story, Berry serves as Kamen Rider J's link to the Earth Spirits and a constant companion on the ground. In a crucial moment during the film, Berry bravely intervenes to save a young girl named Kana from a magical spell cast by the villain Garai. This heroic act is fatal, as Berry is struck down and seemingly killed by Garai. However, in the film's finale, Berry is resurrected. The official Kamen Rider guidebook confirms that Berry is revived after being bathed in the immense spiritual energy released when Kamen Rider J assumes his giant form, known as Jumbo Formation.

The relationship between Berry and Kouji Segawa is central to the character's role. Berry acts as a trusted partner, assisting the environmentalist reporter after he is killed and resurrected with the power of J. Berry's role was expanded in a novelization, which delves deeper into its origins. In this version, Berry is an ancient insect granted intelligence by a princess from the ancient Canaan civilization, who shares a connection with the character Kana. The novel also depicts Berry as having a slightly old-fashioned way of speaking, a contrast to its film portrayal, and it survives the final battle to remain with Kouji. Berry also appears in the short film Kamen Rider World, where it is injured while trying to warn Kamen Riders ZO and J about a new threat.

Notable abilities of Berry include human speech, hovering flight, and a high degree of intelligence and loyalty. Despite its small size compared to the monsters and giant warriors it aids, Berry displays tremendous courage, willingly sacrificing itself in a direct attack on a much more powerful enemy to break a magical hold on an innocent person.
