Description
Issamu Minami is the protagonist who, after the events of his previous battle against the Gorgom cult, was living a more peaceful life when a new threat forced a dramatic transformation upon him, leading him to become Kamen Rider Black RX.
His background begins with the traumatic experience of being kidnapped by the secret organization Gorgom on his nineteenth birthday. Along with his foster brother Nobuhiko Akizuki, he was subjected to surgery to implant the King Stone, a solar-powered artifact meant to turn him into a mutant warrior known as Black Sun. While Nobuhiko was fully converted into the villainous Shadow Moon, Issamu escaped with the help of a repentant accomplice and retained his human memories and spirit, becoming Kamen Rider Black to fight against Gorgom.
Following the defeat of Gorgom, Issamu attempts to rebuild a normal life. He is taken in by the Sahara family, living with his uncle Shunkichi, aunt Utako, and their two children, Shigeru and Hitomi. He finds work as a helicopter pilot for his uncle’s company and begins a relationship with a photographer named Reiko Shiratori. This period of peace ends when the alien Crisis Empire arrives to conquer Earth. Aware of his past as Kamen Rider Black, the Empire captures Issamu and offers him a chance to join them. When he refuses, he is stripped of his powers and cast into space to die. Mortally wounded, the King Stone within his body reacts with the unfiltered radiation of the sun, triggering a powerful mutation that revives him as the more powerful Kamen Rider Black RX, the Child of the Sun.
In his civilian identity, Issamu is presented as a young man who has found renewed happiness and stability after the darkness of his past. He is noticeably more cheerful, relaxed, and optimistic compared to his more solemn and driven demeanor as Kamen Rider Black, smiling frequently and sharing warm moments with the Sahara family and Reiko. This lighter personality is a reflection of his new life, having left behind the life of a fugitive to find a place where he belongs. However, he still carries the weight of his past, particularly concerning his brother, Nobuhiko. The return of Shadow Moon resurrects old nightmares and causes Issamu deep anguish, forcing him to relive the trauma of their lost brotherhood.
Issamu's primary motivation throughout his journey as RX is the protection of his newfound home and the people he cares about. While he was once a solitary avenger, he now fights alongside a network of friends and found family. He is fiercely protective of the Sahara children, who look up to him as an uncle, and he develops a strong partnership with Reiko, who becomes a capable ally. His fight against the Crisis Empire is not just a battle for Earth's survival, but also a personal mission to defend the peaceful life he has worked so hard to build. A key personal motivation is his enduring desire to save his foster brother; when a memory-wiped Shadow Moon reappears, Issamu is driven not just to defeat him but to reach the humanity still buried within the villain.
In the story, Issamu's role is that of a reborn hero who must adapt to a threat unlike any he has faced before. The Crisis Empire is a massive, inter-dimensional alien force, far more overwhelming than the Earth-bound Gorgom. To counter this, his transformation into Kamen Rider Black RX comes with a significant increase in power and new capabilities. He wields the Revolving Laser, an energy sword he can draw from his King Stone belt, and his primary finishing move is the Double Kick. His living motorcycle, Battle Hopper, is also reborn as Acrobatter, a sentient bike capable of speech and detecting enemies.
A defining aspect of his role is the ability to access two additional forms. When overwhelmed by grief and rage, he transforms into Robo Rider, a heavily armored, slower form with immense punching power and a laser gun called the Vortex Shooter. In moments of desperate peril, he becomes Bio Rider, a more agile form that can liquefy his body to slip through any confinement and wields the Bio Blade. This makes RX the first Kamen Rider with multiple distinct forms, allowing him to adapt his strategy to any opponent. He later gains another powerful ally in Ridron, a super-intelligent, transforming car capable of land, sea, and dimensional travel.
Key relationships define Issamu’s second life. His bond with the Sahara family provides him with the emotional stability and warmth he lacked before. His relationship with Reiko Shiratori grows from a simple romance into a true partnership, as she becomes one of the few people to know his secret identity and actively helps him fight. The psychological shadow of his past looms large in the form of Nobuhiko Akizuki, his lost brother and the tragic villain Shadow Moon. Their confrontations are filled with pain and nostalgia, and Nobuhiko’s eventual redemption and sacrifice for Issamu is a pivotal, emotional moment. Other allies include Joe Kazumi, a ciborgue freed from Crisis who becomes a loyal friend, and Kyoko Matoba, a young psychic seeking revenge on the empire.
Issamu undergoes significant development from the tormented warrior of the past to a hopeful champion of the future. While his journey as RX showcases a more mature and emotionally secure hero, it is also marked by profound tragedy. The death of the Sahara parents near the end of the series is a devastating blow that reminds him that heroism comes with great personal cost. By the end of his story, having defeated the Crisis Empire and seen his brother find peace in death, Issamu decides to leave his new family and friends to continue his training, demonstrating a restless spirit that defines him as a warrior forever on a journey.
His notable abilities are varied and powerful. As Kamen Rider Black RX, he possesses enhanced strength, speed, and durability superior to his previous form. His signature weapons and techniques include the Revolcane, an energy sword used to defeat most monsters; the King Stone Flash, a blinding light emitted from his belt; and the Macro Visor, which allows him to analyze an enemy's weakness. His alternate forms grant him specialized powers, such as the super strength of Robo Rider and the fluid, intangible body of Bio Rider. His vehicles, the talking motorcycle Acrobatter and the supercar Ridron, are also sentient and capable of transforming to support his different forms, making him a highly versatile and well-equipped fighter.
