Description
Nobuhiko Akizuki is a central character in the tokusatsu series Kamen Rider BLACK. He is introduced as the adoptive brother and childhood best friend of the protagonist, Kotaro Minami. The two were born on the same day during a solar eclipse, a circumstance that makes them the chosen candidates to become the Century Kings of the dark organization Gorgom. Nobuhiko’s father, Professor Soichiro Akizuki, adopted Kotaro after his parents died, and the boys grew up as close as blood brothers. At the start of the story, Nobuhiko is a university student studying science and an active member of his school’s soccer club, where he and Kotaro are rival players for the top position.
On the night of their nineteenth birthday, both young men are kidnapped by Gorgom and subjected to a ritual to transform them into the Century Kings, implanting each with a Kingstone. Nobuhiko receives the Kingstone of the Moon, while Kotaro receives the Kingstone of the Sun. During the procedure, Professor Akizuki intervenes in an attempt to stop the brainwashing. In the ensuing chaos, Kotaro escapes, but Nobuhiko is injured by electrical cables and left behind in a comatose state. He is kept on life support by the three priests of Gorgom and later, through their power and the influence of the Creation King, is reborn as the silver warrior Shadow Moon. By that time, his memory has been wiped and his original personality almost entirely erased. He becomes a cold, ruthless, and calculating antagonist who is fully loyal to Gorgom’s goal of world domination and the elimination of humanity.
As Shadow Moon, Nobuhiko’s motivations are simple: to claim his rightful place as the next Creation King and to destroy Kamen Rider Black, whom he regards as a rival and a traitor to Gorgom. He shows no hesitation in attacking civilians or using any means necessary to achieve his ends. Despite his complete transformation, a faint trace of his former self remains. He never directly harms his younger sister, Akizuki Kyoko, or his former girlfriend, Kida Katsumi, indicating that a fragment of his old emotional bonds still exists. This residual humanity adds a tragic layer to his character, especially for Kotaro, who desperately hopes to save his friend.
In the narrative, Nobuhiko serves as the supreme enemy of Kamen Rider Black. His role is to be the dark mirror of the hero: both are created from the same process, possess equal power, and share a common origin. Where Kotaro uses his strength to protect people, Nobuhiko uses his to oppress them. Their conflict is deeply personal, and much of the series’ dramatic weight comes from Kotaro’s struggle to fight his own brother. Nobuhiko’s development is largely a descent into pure villainy, with only brief moments—such as a temporary forced return to his human form by the Creation King—where his original consciousness flickers. In the sequel series Kamen Rider Black RX, he returns as a revived, amnesiac Shadow Moon, still driven by instinct to fight Kotaro, but eventually regains his human form and dies redeeming himself by saving two children.
Nobuhiko’s key relationships are defined by his connection to Kotaro, his family, and the Gorgom hierarchy. His bond with Kotaro is the emotional core of the series: a friendship that turns into a tragic rivalry, with both characters being unable to escape the destiny forced upon them. His relationship with his sister Kyoko is marked by his unwillingness to harm her, and his connection to Katsumi is similarly restrained. His interactions with the three high priests of Gorgom—Darom, Bishum, and Balaom—are those of a superior subordinate; he often acts on his own authority while still serving the Creation King.
As a combatant, Nobuhiko possesses abilities equal to those of Kamen Rider Black. His physiology grants him superhuman strength, speed, and durability, and he can jump great distances. His body is covered in a metallic silver armor-like skin called Silver Guard, which is tougher than Black’s own armor. He wields the Satan Saber, a cursed blade capable of tremendous destruction, and can perform powerful punches and kicks enhanced by the triggers on his elbows and legs. Unlike Black, he does not have a transformation belt that allows him to revert to human form at will; his form is essentially permanent until the Creation King intervenes. His fighting style is direct and brutal, often overwhelming his opponents with sheer force. In Black RX, he gains the ability to manifest twin swords called Shadow Sabers.
Nobuhiko Akizuki’s story is one of a person stripped of his humanity by a malevolent organization, transformed into the ultimate adversary of the person he loved most, and ultimately finding a fleeting redemption only in death.
