Description
Kotaro Minami is a young man with a deeply tragic origin, born on the day of a solar eclipse alongside his stepbrother, Nobuhiko Akizuki. This celestial event marked them as the chosen heirs to the throne of Gorgom, a malevolent secret cult. Orphaned at the age of three, Kotaro was raised by Nobuhiko’s father, Soichiro Akizuki, unaware of the dark destiny that awaited him. On his nineteenth birthday, he and Nobuhiko were kidnapped by Gorgom and subjected to a horrific transformation surgery to become the Century Kings, with Kotaro designated as Black Sun. Before the cult could complete the process by remodeling his brain, his adoptive father rescued him, though Soichiro was killed in the ensuing escape. Armed with the Kingstone of the Sun embedded in his belt, Kotaro is able to transform into the grasshopper-themed warrior Kamen Rider BLACK, a name he adopts for himself to fight against Gorgom and his own fate.
Despite the intense anger he harbors toward Gorgom for their cruelty and the loss of his family, Kotaro’s personality is defined by remarkable kindness and a deep-seated sense of justice. He is a hot-blooded and determined young man who is not easily deterred, pressing forward with an unwavering resolve even in the face of overwhelming tragedy. This compassion extends to all, making him a friend to children, whom he often helps and coaches in soccer, and even to his enemies, as he frequently shows mercy to the monsters he fights. While he carries the weight of his modifications and the battle against his own kind, he does not allow his sorrow to consume him, instead channeling it into his mission to protect others and save his stepbrother.
Kotaro’s primary motivation is to avenge his parents and adoptive father, to dismantle Gorgom’s conspiracy, and most painfully, to rescue Nobuhiko. The relationship with his stepbrother is the emotional core of his story. While Nobuhiko lies in a coma for much of the series, Kotaro fights desperately to free him. When Nobuhiko awakens as the rival Century King Shadow Moon with his memories erased, Kotaro is forced into a heartbreaking conflict with the brother he loves, making their battles a tragic duty rather than a simple fight against evil. In his civilian life, he is also closely tied to Nobuhiko’s younger sister Kyoko and his girlfriend Katsumi Kida, who are unaware of his secret identity for a time. These relationships provide him with a fragile sense of normalcy and a direct link to the life that Gorgom stole from them all.
Throughout the series, Kotaro undergoes significant development, growing from a man struggling to accept his monstrous new form into a seasoned and powerful hero. Initially, he agonizes over being a modified human, but he gradually comes to terms with his identity. He faces constant challenges that force him to innovate in battle, such as when an enemy’s hard shell neutralizes his standard attacks, leading him to develop more powerful versions of his techniques. His journey reaches its lowest point when he is killed by Shadow Moon, only to be resurrected by the grateful Whale Mutant, whose life he had once spared. This act of compassion leads to him returning with greatly enhanced power, demonstrating that his humanity is his greatest strength. Ultimately, he fulfills his grim destiny by defeating Shadow Moon and the Creation King, yet the victory is bittersweet, and he ends his first series as a solitary figure riding off on his motorcycle, having lost nearly everyone he loved.
As Kamen Rider BLACK, Kotaro possesses a vast array of superhuman abilities. His cyborg body grants him phenomenal muscle strength, thirty times that of a normal human, as well as incredible speed and durability. His senses are highly advanced, with his Multi-Eye allowing him to see in the dark and detect an enemy's weakness, and his Sensoring Ears able to hear a whisper from five hundred meters away. His primary fighting style is a form of bare-fisted martial arts that incorporates many grappling and throwing techniques. His signature finishing moves are the Rider Punch and Rider Kick, which concentrate the energy of his Kingstone into his fists and feet to unleash devastating, explosive attacks. For more dire situations, he can use the Kingstone Flash, firing a powerful burst of energy directly from his belt to repel enemies or break free from illusions. His final and most powerful weapon is the Satan Sabre, a sword that only a Century King can wield, which he uses to destroy the Creation King.
