Description
Issamu Minami, known in the original Japanese version as Kotaro Minami, is the protagonist of the story who transforms into the warrior Kamen Rider BLACK. Born on the day of a solar eclipse, he and his adoptive brother, Nobuhiko Akizuki, were chosen by the secret cult Gorgom to become their next leaders, the Century Kings. On the night of their nineteenth birthday, the two were kidnapped and underwent a horrific surgery to implant a Kingstone, a powerful solar energy source, into their bodies. While the procedure granted them superhuman strength, agility, and enhanced senses, its purpose was to turn them into mutant warriors who would duel to the death, with the victor becoming the evil Creation King and plunging the world into darkness. However, their adoptive father, Dr. Akizuki, who had been coerced into helping Gorgom, repented and interfered with the mind-altering part of the operation. This allowed Issamu to escape before his memories and humanity were erased, though Nobuhiko remained in the cult's clutches and was later transformed into the rival warrior Shadow Moon.
Issamu is defined by a strong sense of justice and a compassionate, determined personality. Despite the immense personal tragedy of losing his adoptive parents and being forced to fight his brother, he remains a warm and friendly individual, often acting as a protector of children and displaying a deep capacity for empathy. He is hot-blooded and relentless in his fight, but not naive; he is a capable and resourceful thinker, frequently outpacing Gorgom's complex schemes. His primary role in the story is as a lone hero fighting against the Gorgom cult and the monsters they unleash. He operates from a coffee shop called Capitola, left to him and his adoptive sister Kyoko by a family friend, which serves as his base of operations and a place of refuge. His most significant relationship is the tragic Cain and Abel conflict with his adoptive brother Nobuhiko, who becomes his dark counterpart, Shadow Moon. He shares a close bond with his adoptive sister Kyoko and his brother's fiancée, Satie, both of whom he protects and lives with during his first journey. After the fall of Gorgom, Issamu attempts to rebuild his life, moving in with his uncle Shunkichi Sahara and his family, where he rediscovers his lost joy and becomes a caring, almost fatherly figure to his young cousins Shigeru and Hitomi. He also develops a romantic relationship with a photographer named Reiko Shiratori during this period. Later, as Kamen Rider BLACK RX, he forges new alliances with former enemies of the Crisis Empire, including the archer Kyoko Matoba and the cyborg Joe of the Water, forming a small resistance cell to defend Earth.

At the end of his battle with Gorgom, he is legitimately killed by Shadow Moon but is later resurrected with the help of an elixir provided by the Whale Mutant, a Gorgom monster who chose to help him. Following this final victory, he goes into hiding, his heroic identity thought lost. Six months later, while working as a helicopter pilot, he is captured by a new interdimensional threat called the Crisis Empire. After refusing to cooperate with them, his Kingstone is shattered and he is cast into space to die. Instead, the unfiltered radiation of the sun mutates his power, causing him to be reborn as the more powerful "Child of the Sun," Kamen Rider BLACK RX. In this new form, he can further transform into two specialized modes: the powerful, heavy-combat Robo Rider and the agile, liquid-bodied Bio Rider. His sentient motorcycle, Battle Hopper, is also reborn into a more advanced machine called Acrobatter after being destroyed. This evolution marks a transition from a tragic, cursed warrior to a more optimistic and versatile hero, though he continues to carry the memories and lessons of his past.
