Description
Masahiko Okamura is a young boy who becomes one of the first people in Japan to befriend Daisuke Yamamoto, the wild child from the Amazon who transforms into Kamen Rider Amazon. He is the nephew of Professor Kōsaka, a scientist who knew the secrets of the Inca tribe, and after his uncle is killed by the Geddon organization, Masahiko takes on the role of helping Daisuke navigate civilized society. He attends Jonan Elementary School and lives with his older sister Ritsuko.
In terms of background, Masahiko's father is deceased, and he has grown up under the care of his uncle and sister. When Daisuke first arrives in Japan, Masahiko is among the few who immediately accept him. Despite Daisuke’s rough, animalistic mannerisms and lack of language skills, Masahiko shows patience and compassion. By the end of episode twelve and into episode thirteen, he takes on the task of teaching Daisuke to speak coherent Japanese, often correcting his pronunciation and explaining everyday customs. This role as a cultural and linguistic guide makes Masahiko essential to Daisuke's integration.
His personality is marked by bravery, loyalty, and a strong sense of justice. Although he is only a schoolchild, he does not hesitate to stand up to the monstrous Beastmen sent by Geddon and later the Garanda Empire. He views these villains as bullies who harm innocent people, and he is determined to help Daisuke stop them. His courage is notable; even when facing dangerous creatures, he shows no fear if it means protecting his friends or the city. He is also kind-hearted and empathetic, quickly forming a deep emotional bond with Daisuke despite their differences in upbringing.
Masahiko’s primary motivation is to support Daisuke and combat the evil organizations threatening Japan. He is driven by the loss of his uncle and the desire to prevent further harm. He wants to help Daisuke understand the world around him so that they can fight together more effectively. This motivation grows stronger as the series progresses and he witnesses Daisuke's selfless heroism.
His role in the story is that of a faithful young ally and a bridge between Daisuke’s wild origins and Japanese society. While he does not possess superpowers or fighting abilities, he contributes through his intelligence, resourcefulness, and unwavering moral support. He often accompanies Daisuke and the veteran ally Tōbei Tachibana, providing local knowledge and encouragement. In some episodes, he becomes a target of the villains, used as bait to lure Daisuke into traps, but he never wavers in his resolve.
Key relationships include his bond with Daisuke, whom he affectionately calls "Amazon." This friendship is the emotional core of his character arc. His sister Ritsuko is another important relationship; she initially distrusts Daisuke because his arrival brings the Geddon organization to Japan, but after being rescued multiple times, she comes to trust and support both Daisuke and her brother’s involvement. Masahiko also respects Tōbei Tachibana, who provides practical guidance and a sense of stability. Additionally, he briefly interacts with the reformed Mole Beastman, whom he learns to accept as an ally.
Throughout the series, Masahiko undergoes clear development. He begins as a normal schoolboy who unexpectedly finds himself in the middle of a supernatural conflict. By the end, he becomes a more seasoned and confident companion, having faced death and danger multiple times. His initial reliance on Daisuke for protection evolves into a partnership where he actively contributes to plans and rallies support. He learns that true strength is not only about physical power but about courage and friendship.
Notable abilities include his linguistic skill and patience in teaching Daisuke Japanese, as well as his keen observation and ability to think on his feet when helping Daisuke during battles. Though he has no combat prowess, his bravery and quick thinking make him an invaluable asset to the team. His most remarkable trait is his unshakeable faith in Daisuke, which inspires those around him and highlights the theme of unity against evil.
