Description
Archbishop Wing, also known as Archbishop Tsubasa, is a major antagonist from the Japanese television series Kamen Rider V3. He serves as a high-ranking executive within the Destron organization, a secret terrorist society bent on world domination. Wing is specifically the commander of the Destron Wing Unit, an ancient cult of vampires summoned from Tibet to assist the organization's Japan branch following the death of the previous executive, Baron Fang. He is the third of four primary Destron leaders to challenge the hero, Kamen Rider V3, during the series.
As a character, Archbishop Wing is depicted as a robe-wearing general who carries a distinctive spiked staff in his human form. His personality is intrinsically tied to his nature as the leader of a vampire cult, with his motivations and schemes focusing on terrorizing the population through vampiric means. His primary plan involves employing a virus called the Himalayan Devil to turn residents of major cities into vampire slaves, demonstrating a strategic and cruel approach to conquest that relies on spreading fear and subjugating civilians. While some viewers have considered his arc less memorable than those of other Destron generals, his role as a significant obstacle for the protagonist is well-established.
Within the story, Archbishop Wing's role is to command his Wing Unit and eliminate Kamen Rider V3. His unit consists of various Inhumanoids, which are mutated monsters based on flying animals and a plant, including Kaen Condor, Kodama Musasabi, Satsujin Dokugarla, and Bashogan. After these subordinates fail to defeat the Rider, Wing is forced to take direct action. He assumes his true Kaijin form as the Vampire Bat, also known as Sibito Koumori, to engage V3 in personal combat. In this final confrontation, he is destroyed by V3's signature technique, the V3 Rider Kick.
Key relationships define Archbishop Wing's place in the narrative. He is a subordinate to the Great Leader of Destron, who summons him and his unit to Japan. He also exists within a chain of command, serving as a direct successor to Baron Fang and is later succeeded himself by Marshal Armor, another high-ranking Destron general who takes over after Wing's defeat.
The character also undergoes a notable development after his initial defeat. Archbishop Wing is later revived by his successor, Marshal Armor, in a new form called Zombie Bat. In this resurrected state, he returns to ambush Kamen Rider V3. However, his second chance at victory is short-lived, as he is defeated once again by the Kamen Rider, marking his final destruction.
Archbishop Wing possesses several notable abilities. In his standard human guise, he is proficient with his primary weapon, a spiked staff. When he transforms into his Vampire Bat form, he gains the power of flight, sharp claws on his wings for combat, and the ability to drain the blood of his victims. In his subsequent Zombie Bat incarnation, he retains the ability to fly and wield his sharp claws, and is also equipped with a spear-like tongue capable of draining energy or magic from his opponents. These monstrous abilities make him a formidable foe, forcing Kamen Rider V3 to develop new techniques to achieve victory.
