Description
Mari Sonoda is the female protagonist of the television series Kamen Rider 555. She experienced a tragic childhood, losing both her parents in a fire and later being adopted by the former president of the megacorporation Smart Brain. This adoption placed her at the center of a secret conflict between humans and the Orphnochs, mutant creatures representing a new stage of human evolution. Mari was a member of the Ryusei School, a group targeted by Orphnochs, and was entrusted with the Faiz Gear and the Auto Vajin motorcycle by her foster father. However, she lacks the genetic compatibility required to transform into a Kamen Rider herself.
Her personality is spirited and fierce, often engaging in heated arguments with the main Rider, Takumi Inui. Despite a cunning streak, she possesses a strong sense of justice that allows her to clearly distinguish right from wrong. She is determined to uncover the truth behind the massacre at the Ryusei School and is driven to protect those around her. Even without combat abilities, she acts as the emotional anchor for the group, refusing to give up on others even when their secrets are revealed.
Mari lives in Tokyo and works at a dry cleaning shop run by Keitaro Kikuchi, who becomes a close friend and provides her with a home. She shares a complex, bickering bond with Takumi Inui, fiercely supporting him despite his own Orphnoch nature. She maintains a close, sisterly relationship with Keitaro. She also has a complicated history with Masato Kusaka, who is obsessively protective of her. Mari shows compassion toward Yuji Kiba, an Orphnoch who initially seeks peace with humans, and offers him support during his struggles.
Over the course of the story, Mari evolves from a victim of secret history into a resilient survivor who works to bridge the gap between humans and Orphnochs. Her unwavering belief in the goodness of others frequently drives the plot and maintains the group’s moral compass. She is later revealed to be the human form of the Lynx Orphnoch (also known as the Wildcat Orphnoch in later material), granting her latent Orphnoch abilities. This revelation deepens her connection to the central conflict, but her role remains that of a human-hearted mediator rather than a frontline combatant.
