Description
Bearkonger, also known in his human disguise as the Old Hunter, is a brown bear-themed combat cyborg of the villainous organization Shocker who appears in the forty-sixth episode of the original Kamen Rider series. To carry out the organization's plan known as the Snow Operation, which was meant to melt the snow of Kusatsu Plateau using a high-temperature energy bomb and trigger catastrophic flooding, Shocker forced the physicist Professor Mikawa to complete a device capable of sustaining heat of two thousand degrees. Bearkonger was assigned to oversee the professor and his son and to eliminate anyone who interfered, and he carried out this surveillance disguised as an elderly mountain hunter living near the ski resort the Mikawa family visited.
His personality is defined by cunning and brutality. Rather than attacking openly, he prefers deception, quietly watching his targets while hidden in the form of the Old Hunter and only revealing his true monstrous appearance when it is time to kill. The episode shows his ruthless nature when he kills a prisoner as a demonstration, and his crushing strength is described as sufficient to crack a human skull with ease. He fights with a fierce, aggressive style suited to snowy terrain and shows no hesitation in harming hostages or children to protect Shocker's secret plans.
In the story, he serves as the direct antagonist of the episode. When young Tadashi discovers the organization's plot, Bearkonger moves to kill him but is intercepted by Ichimonji Hayato and Taki Kazuya, who had followed the boy. In the ensuing fight, Bearkonger wounds the hero's left arm with his claws but fails to kill Tadashi and is forced to retreat. Later, as the energy bomb begins to activate, he captures Professor Mikawa and Tachibana Tobei and holds them hostage in Shocker's hideout to keep the Rider away from the detonating device. When the Rider frees the hostages and Taki defuses the bomb, Bearkonger flees on a snowmobile and drags the Rider along in pursuit, but once his plan collapses he is forced into a final battle and destroyed by Kamen Rider 2's Rider Kick.

He answers to Doctor Shinigami, the Shocker executive who plans the operation, and his main interactions are with the people he watches or threatens: Professor Mikawa, whom he intimidates into building the bomb; Tadashi, whose life he is ordered to take; and the members of the Tachibana Racing Club, whom he seizes as hostages.
