Description
Kanai is the human form assumed by the Giraffa Undead, a powerful being classified as the Category King of Diamonds. As one of the highest-ranking Undead, his true form is that of a humanoid giraffe stag beetle, towering at 225 centimeters tall, with a metallic gold and green carapace and distinctive mandible-like horns. In the human guise he adopts during the modern era, Kanai appears as a sharp-featured young man wearing glasses, a persona he uses to observe humanity and navigate the world without drawing immediate attention to his monstrous nature.
This Undead is characterized by a cold and calculating intelligence, combined with a genuine and intense hatred for humans, whom he views as inferior beings. Unlike many of his kind who engage in battle for its own sake, Kanai is a cautious and strategic thinker. His core motivation is to win the Battle Fight, the ancient ritual that determines which species will dominate the Earth. However, he is perceptive enough to realize that the current Battle Fight has been artificially manipulated and is not proceeding naturally. To this end, he seeks to expose the true mastermind behind this interference, not out of a sense of justice, but to remove obstacles and secure an efficient path to his own victory. His ultimate goal is to seal the Joker, a special Undead whose survival would trigger the end of the world, and thereby claim victory for his own kind to create a new world order under his rule. He chillingly declares that in his vision of peace, there is no place for humanity.
Kanai enters the story as a major antagonist in the final arc. After deducing that BOARD chairman Hiroshi Tennoji is the one manipulating the Battle Fight, he confronts him but is initially overpowered by Tennoji, who has fused with the powerful Cerberus Undead. After being rescued by Mutsuki Kamijo, one of the Kamen Riders, Kanai receives treatment and feigns an alliance with the Riders to defeat their common enemy, Tennoji. In this joint effort, he helps them destroy the enhanced Cerberus II. However, true to his pragmatic and treacherous nature, Kanai immediately betrays them, killing the incapacitated Tennoji and stealing the Cerberus card for himself. This card grants him the power to forcibly seal any Undead, including the Joker. Having used the Riders as tools to eliminate his biggest rival, he now possesses the means to achieve his own goal, setting him on a direct collision course with them.
His key relationships are defined by this strategic manipulation. He forms a temporary and insincere alliance with the Riders Kazuma Kenzaki, Sakuya Tachibana, and Mutsuki Kamijo. Mutsuki, who saved his life, may be the recipient of a rare, non-violent gesture from Kanai, though this does not sway the Undead from his ultimate plan. His most significant rivalry is with Hajime Aikawa, the Joker. Kanai psychologically torments Hajime, knowing that the Joker's victory or sealing spells doom for the world as they know it, and he attempts to use this knowledge to gain the upper hand. His final conflict is with Sakuya Tachibana, the rider Kamen Rider Garren. Despite the Giraffa Undead's immense power, he is ultimately sealed by Garren in a desperate final attack.
Throughout his brief but significant appearance, Kanai shows little development in the sense of personal change. He remains firmly fixed on his goal from beginning to end. However, his role demonstrates the desperation and ruthlessness that surfaces among the Undead as the Battle Fight reaches its climax. His arc is a classic tale of the schemer being undone by the very obstacles he sought to eliminate, falling not to a heroic final attack but to a basic, point-blank barrage of gunfire from a weakened Garren, a death that highlights a potential flaw: his body's defense may be unusually weak when his powerful barrier is neutralized.
As a Category K Undead, Kanai possesses formidable combat abilities. He wields twin swords named Helter and Skelter, which are strong enough to shatter the Orichalcum Element generated by a Rider’s transformation belt, effectively canceling their henshin. From these blades, he can also fire powerful shockwaves for long-range attacks. His signature defensive ability is a powerful energy barrier that can block most incoming attacks. He combines this with an analytical mind and sharp instincts, once destroying the sealed form of Kenzaki's transformation roach to prevent him from becoming a Rider mid-battle. However, despite his high rank and power, he is not invincible; his defenses can be overcome at close range, and he demonstrates a vulnerability to sustained, rapid-fire attacks. His Rouse Card, Evolution Giraffa, is notable for being the card that allows Sakuya Tachibana to transform into Garren King Form, a powerful upgraded state.
