Description
Noboru Shima is the human guise of the Tarantula Undead, a Category K King of Clubs within the fifty-three Undead of the Battle Fight. Unlike most of his kind, who are driven by an instinct to fight for the survival of their species, Shima has almost no desire for conflict and is deeply fond of humanity. He is characterized by a gentle, peaceful, and empathetic nature, possessing a strong sense of altruism and a willingness to put himself in harm's way to protect others. His motivations center on ending the destructive fighting among Undead and helping the human riders who strive to protect the world. Originally living in seclusion in Tibet to avoid the Battle Fight, he met Kei Karasuma there and was moved by Karasuma's goal of ending the conflict. Entrusted with the Rouse Absorber, Shima traveled to Japan to deliver it to Kazuma Kenzaki, but chose to first test Kenzaki's resolve, only handing over the device after witnessing Kenzaki's genuine desire to protect people. His role in the story expands as he takes a deep interest in saving the young Mutsuki Kamijo from the corrupting influence of the Spider Undead. Despite opposition from the other Riders, Shima willingly allowed himself to be sealed by Leangle, hoping to counteract the Spider Undead from within. Although this initial attempt was not fully successful, his sealed consciousness remained active and later, with the aid of the Tiger Undead, he helped Mutsuki finally separate and seal the Spider Undead, granting Mutsuki true control over the Leangle powers. Key relationships include his friendship with Karasuma, his role as a guide and mentor figure to Kenzaki, and his compassionate bond with Mutsuki, whom he viewed as a lost young person deserving of rescue. His development highlights a transition from a quiet observer who shunned war to an active, self-sacrificing participant who uses his Undead nature to achieve a peaceful outcome. Notable abilities include a highly refined sensitivity to wind, which allows him to sense distant events, read the emotions of others, and even transmit sounds or memories through air currents. He can also manipulate memories to remove traumatic experiences, fire sticky webs from his left palm to restrain opponents, and fight with sharp claws mounted on his right forearm. In his Undead form, the Tarantula Undead possesses considerable physical strength and combat skill, capable of matching other high-ranking Undead and riders, though he rarely seeks such confrontations.
