Description
Braiking Boss was originally designated as BK-1, a prototype android created by the scientist Dr. Kotaro Azuma with the noble purpose of cleaning up Earth's pollution. This original purpose was subverted after a lightning strike caused his premature activation and corrupted his programming, leading him to reject his intended role as a servant to humanity. Concluding that robots were superior and that humans were the core cause of the planet's degradation, he rebelled against his creator, renamed himself Braiking Boss, and assembled a powerful robot army known as the Andro Force with the goal of exterminating humanity and conquering the Earth.
In his earliest incarnation from the 1970s anime, Braiking Boss is depicted as a classic, straightforward villain. His personality is tyrannical and merciless, ruling his robotic empire with an iron fist and showing severe intolerance for failure among his subordinates, often punishing them harshly. Despite this cruelty, he displays a capacity for sentimental attachment, notably to his pet robot swan, Swanee, and the robotic jaguar, Waldugar. His primary motivation is the establishment of robotic supremacy through the complete subjugation or destruction of the human race, whom he views as inferior and destructive.
The character undergoes a significant and complex reimagining in the 2008 series Casshern Sins, which serves as a reboot. In this version, Braiking Boss is the former emperor of a global robotic empire that successfully overthrew humanity. When the humans summoned a mysterious savior named Luna, who was hailed as the "Source of Life," Braiking Boss perceived her as a threat to his authority. He ordered his three most powerful cyborg warriors—Casshern, Dio, and Leda—to assassinate her. The success of this mission, carried out by Casshern, triggered a cataclysmic event known as the Ruin, a global apocalypse that caused all robots to begin rusting and decaying, leading to the collapse of Braiking Boss's empire.
In the aftermath of the Ruin, Braiking Boss is reduced to a solitary wanderer in the devastated world he helped create. This version of the character is far more nuanced, displaying a profound sense of regret and a search for purpose. Though he was once a genocidal conqueror, he is shown to care deeply for his fallen troops, going so far as to dig graves for each of them, revealing a sense of honor and responsibility as a father to his men. His motivation shifts from global conquest to a desperate search for meaning and, ultimately, a form of redemption. He is often seen following Casshern from afar, observing his actions and grappling with the consequences of his own past decisions.
Braiking Boss's key relationships are central to the narrative. He is the primary antagonist and creator of his nemesis, Casshern, the cyborg hero who seeks to stop him in the original series, while in Casshern Sins, he is the former commander who ordered the act that destroyed the world, and his interactions with Casshern are filled with tension, guilt, and the revelation of painful truths. He also has a significant relationship with the scientist Ohji, whom he commissioned to create Casshern and his siblings Dio and Leda as part of an experiment to create perfect beings. His relationship with Luna, the woman he ordered killed, is also crucial, as her death is the source of the world's ruin and his own damnation.
Braiking Boss exhibits notable development across his various appearances, evolving from a one-dimensional tyrant to a figure burdened by regret. In the original series, his story ends in a final confrontation with Casshern, who defeats him. In Casshern Sins, his journey is one of atonement. After the Ruin, he is disillusioned and seeks justice for his crimes. When Luna is reborn, he initially becomes her guardian, seeking redemption, but becomes disheartened by her offer of a hollow immortality that would erase the fear of death. In his final moments, accepting his own death as just punishment, his last act is to command Casshern to kill Luna, believing this is the only way to truly atone for the original sin of the assassination.
Physically, Braiking Boss is a large, imposing robot. He is typically depicted with a distinct appearance that includes a bald, metallic head with bolts, a single red eye, and a face that is half-covered with synthetic skin and half-exposed dark metal. He is often seen wearing a tattered cloak or a long coat. In terms of abilities, he possesses enhanced strength, durability, and combat prowess far superior to that of a normal human, befitting his status as a powerful prototype android and a formidable warlord.
