Description
Toyo, also known as Auntie Toyo, is an elderly woman who appears in the early portion of Fist of the North Star. She is an old lady of average height with a wrinkled face and graying hair worn in a bun at the back of her head. Her clothing consists of layered robes and a scarf, and she is shown carrying a rifle with only a few bullets.
After the nuclear war left many children without parents, Toyo took it upon herself to create a village where she could raise the orphans abandoned in the wasteland. Her background is that of a caretaker rather than a warrior; she is not physically strong, and she is aware that her age limits her ability to protect the children in her charge. Her primary motivation is the safety and well-being of the orphans she has adopted, and she treats each of them with genuine love and affection. She is also practical and hardworking, as shown by her plan to dig a well at the center of her village so the children can have clean water.
In the story, Toyo becomes involved with Kenshiro when a boy from her village named Taki goes out to find help and eventually returns with Kenshiro, Bat, and Rin. She welcomes them warmly, offers them water, and explains that all the children sleeping in her home were abandoned by their parents after the war. Tragedy strikes when Taki sneaks out at night to refill a canteen as a gift for her and is killed by a crossbow bolt from a member of the Warriors gang. Kenshiro returns the boy's body to her, and she breaks down in tears. Kenshiro then helps her by punching through the rock at the bottom of the well and exposing the water, which she gratefully receives.
Her key relationships center on the orphans she cares for, including Bat, who is counted among her adoptive children, and Taki, whose death deeply wounds her. She also forms a meaningful bond with Kenshiro, relying on his strength while he is present. She shows wisdom in her understanding of Kenshiro's role in the world, telling a child that there are other people who need him too and allowing him to leave rather than demanding he stay to protect her village.

Toyo is overpowered but fights back, shooting Jackal with her rifle and grazing his forehead, which only enrages him. The situation worsens when the gang plants dynamite on the children and tries to escape. Toyo rushes to put out the fuses, tackles one child to the ground, and throws the stick of dynamite away while huddling over the child. She dies from the shock of the explosion in Bat's arms, sacrificing herself to save the children. Following her death, the orphans she raised are temporarily cared for by Johnny and later transferred to Mamiya's village.
