Description
The character Crane, whose full name is Arlen Crane, is the primary antagonist in the 1994 live-action film often referred to as The Guyver 2. He is a high-ranking operative for the clandestine global organization known as Chronos, which seeks to use alien biotechnology to mutate humanity into controllable bio-weapons called Zoanoids. In his public role, Crane acts as the affable liaison between the Tempus Corporation, a front for Chronos, and an archaeological excavation team. Secretly, he is the agent in charge of the dig, having been sent to oversee the recovery of an intact alien spacecraft belonging to the Creators, the ancient race responsible for the Guyver units and Zoanoids.
Crane possesses a personality that is cold, calculating, and deeply manipulative. He consistently presents a friendly and reasonable facade to those he considers his pawns, including the excavation team and the protagonist, Sean Barker. This mask of civility hides a cruel and ruthless nature. Crane is utterly devoted to the cause of Chronos and is highly motivated to please his superiors, viewing his own transformation into a Zoanoid as a necessary and acceptable price for power. He rarely considers human cost, being perfectly willing to dispose of the entire excavation team without remorse once they have outlived their usefulness. His notable abilities as a Chronos agent have also made him arrogant, though he retains enough humility to show respect to his superiors within the organization's hierarchy.
Crane's primary role in the story is that of the main villain, directly opposing Sean Barker, the host of the Guyver unit. He is the leader of the Zoanoids stationed at the dig, and as Sean investigates strange bear attacks that are actually Zoanoid activity, Crane works to identify and eliminate this threat to Chronos's plans. After Sean, as the Guyver, kills several of his Zoanoid subordinates, Crane is threatened by his superiors for his repeated failures. In a desperate bid for power and to complete his mission, he takes a damaged second Guyver unit discovered within the alien ship and forcibly merges with it.
This act leads to Crane's most notable transformation and ultimate fate. By combining his existing Zoanoid biology with the Guyver armor, he becomes a hybrid creature known as the Guyver Zoanoid. This form possesses the immense strength and weaponry of a Guyver, including blasts from its head gear. However, the Guyver unit he used was damaged, causing his control medal, the core of the armor, to be unstable. During his final fight with Sean's Guyver, he initially dominates the battle, but his damaged control medal begins to malfunction. The suit begins to consume him, causing him immense agony and distracting him long enough for Sean to exploit the weakness. Crane is ultimately destroyed by the Guyvers Mega-Smasher, a powerful chest-mounted particle beam, which Sean uses as a mercy killing to end his suffering.
