Description
Haruya Sakurai is a student from Shikanotoride High School and a minor character in Battle Royale II: Requiem. He is 15 years old and stands 171 centimeters tall. His most defining personal connection is to Saki Sakurai, a previous winner of the Battle Royale program and his older sister. After Saki won her competition, she killed her teacher and disappeared, leaving her family without contact for a significant period of time.
Haruya is thrust into the central conflict when his entire class is selected to participate in a new Battle Royale program, which tasks them with hunting down and killing Shuya Nanahara, the leader of the anti-government terrorist group Wild Seven. Unlike many of his classmates who perish quickly, Haruya demonstrates notable survival skills. He successfully navigates the initial phases of the mission, including the boat landing and the retrieval of ammunition, and joins the remaining students for the assault on Wild Seven's stronghold. His physical capabilities are noted to be considerable, with a particular strength score and agility that allow him to endure the brutal combat situations.
During the intense gunfight between the students and Wild Seven, Haruya experiences a pivotal moment when he is reunited with his long-lost sister, Saki, who is now a member of the Wild Seven group. The reunion is fraught with unspoken pain; Saki deliberately ignores her brother, likely because she believes she will not survive the upcoming battle and wishes to spare him further anguish. When the students prepare to escape the island ahead of a major attack by the ATAT military forces, Haruya directly confronts his sister. Although she continues to ignore him, Haruya tells her that he will never forget her before he makes his escape. This moment represents his primary emotional arc, moving from a passive participant in the program to an active individual who seeks closure with his family.
Haruya demonstrates resilience and physical endurance. After his sister ignores his plea, he does not force the issue but accepts her unspoken decision, showing a maturity in understanding the grim reality of their situation. His collar, a device meant to execute the students if they disobey, is successfully deactivated by Wild Seven's technology expert, Maki Souda, allowing him to survive where others do not. He ultimately escapes the island with several other surviving classmates, fleeing through a tunnel beneath the Wild Seven hideout. Following the destruction of the island, Haruya travels to Afghanistan where he waits for the other survivors. When he is eventually reunited with his friends, he is overjoyed. The group ultimately decides not to join Wild Seven, and Haruya remains in Afghanistan.
