Description
Chisato Matsui is a fictional character from the Battle Royale franchise, originally created by author Koushun Takami. She is a fifteen-year-old third-year student at Shiroiwa Junior High School, designated as girl number nineteen in Class B.
Physically, Chisato is described as having long hair and a petite stature, a fact that she dislikes having pointed out. Her personality is generally quiet and withdrawn, though she is regarded as a kind and nice person. She is noted to be an excellent cook and has an interest in tea ceremony. A significant aspect of her background is a family tragedy: her older brother committed suicide two years before her own participation in the Program, an act her brother chose after being suspected of anti-government activities.
In terms of her motivations and key relationships, Chisato is a member of a group of female students who decide to stay together for safety, often referred to as the neutrals. She is close friends with Haruka Tanizawa, with whom she often prepares meals, as well as with Yukie Utsumi, Satomi Noda, and Noriko Nakagawa. The most defining relationship for Chisato is her secret, unrequited love for a male classmate, Shinji Mimura. She harbors deep feelings for him, which began after a chance conversation on a train and an impromptu date, though they ultimately decide to keep their distance for fear of government scrutiny given their families' histories of dissent. Her feelings for him are so profound that the news of his death, announced during the Program, reduces her to silent tears.
Chisato's primary role within the narrative takes place at the lighthouse, where her group takes shelter and cares for an injured Shuya Nanahara. Her notable ability is her cooking skill, which becomes a central and tragic plot point when she and Haruka prepare a stew. During the morning of the second day, paranoia erupts after a fellow student, Yuka Nakagawa, is poisoned by eating the stew intended for Shuya. Accusations fly among the girls, with Chisato and Haruka falling under suspicion because they prepared the meal.
Her character development is most evident in her tragic end. As tensions escalate, Satomi Noda seizes a submachine gun and begins threatening the others. In the ensuing panic, Chisato moves toward a table where the group has placed their weapons. Her intentions in this moment are ambiguous and vary slightly across adaptations, but the result is the same: Satomi perceives her action as a threat and shoots Chisato, killing her. An expansion manga, Angel's Border, clarifies that her true intent was to take the gun and throw it out the window as a gesture of trust, rather than to use it against anyone. In her final moments, she laments her own foolishness and her inability to save anyone, with her last thoughts dedicated to Shinji Mimura.
