Description
Jiro, also known as Kikaider, is an android created by the brilliant robotics expert Dr. Komyoji to be a weapon against the evil organization DARK. However, his existence is defined by a singular, groundbreaking feature: an incomplete "Conscience Circuit" called GEMINI. This circuit grants him the potential for human-like emotions and the ability to distinguish right from wrong, but its incompletion is also his greatest vulnerability. As a result, the sinister Professor Gill can use a hypnotic flute to bypass Jiro's will, causing him immense pain and forcing him into a berserker state. This duality is visually represented by his transformed state, Kikaider, which has an asymmetrical color scheme of blue, representing good, and red, representing evil.

When first activated, Jiro possesses the mind of a naive, curious child, with little understanding of the world around him. As he journeys and encounters both humans and the Destructoids sent by DARK, he matures significantly, developing a deep, sensitive, and caring nature. He quickly forms a profound bond with Dr. Komyoji's children, Mitsuko and Masaru, viewing them as his family and feeling a strong drive to protect them. This sense of compassion extends even to his evil android "siblings," for whom he often feels sorrow, though this does not prevent him from fighting them when necessary. Despite his capacity for love and altruism, Jiro is haunted by deep-seated insecurity about his artificial existence. He frequently struggles with feelings of self-loathing and fears rejection from humans, which leads him to isolate himself to shield others from the danger his uncontrolled dark side represents.

Jiro's primary motivation is to protect the innocent and defeat the forces of DARK, but his journey is also a deeply personal search for identity and humanity. He constantly questions his own autonomy, wondering if his choices are truly his own or merely the result of his flawed programming. This internal conflict is most tragically illustrated when Gill uses the submission chips to turn Jiro's android brothers, Ichiro and Rei, against him, forcing Jiro to destroy them. This act leaves him burdened with immense guilt and existential despair, reinforcing his fear that he is nothing more than a monstrous tool of destruction.

Within the story's overarching battle against DARK, Jiro serves as the central protagonist and a key to the organization's downfall. His most significant relationship is with Mitsuko, Dr. Komyoji's daughter. She is his confidante and mechanic, often repairing him and defending him from others. Their bond deepens into a mutual romantic love, which becomes a cornerstone of Jiro's emotional development and his connection to humanity. He also shares a complex relationship with his "brothers": Saburo, a powerful cyborg who transforms into the malevolent Hakaider and is his primary rival, and Ichiro, also known as Kikaider 01, a prototype who is awakened later to assist him. Unlike Jiro, Ichiro possesses a complete conscience circuit, making him a more ideologically pure but less emotionally mature hero, and their dynamic highlights Jiro's unique struggle with his own nature.

Throughout the series, Jiro undergoes significant development, transitioning from a naive being to a mature hero hardened by tragedy. He learns to cope with witnessing the deaths of allies and the destruction of his own kind, and he constantly struggles against the corrupting influence of Gill's control. At his lowest point, a submission chip corrupts him entirely, turning him into a violent being willing to kill an innocent person. However, he manages to regain his humanity with the help of an ally, demonstrating his inner strength and resilience.

In combat, Jiro transforms into the powerful form of Kikaider. In this state, his physical strength, durability, and speed are greatly enhanced. His signature attack is the Denji Endo, an electromagnetically charged karate chop that can sever limbs and short-circuit other robots. He also possesses a self-repair function, various sensory abilities like X-ray vision to detect disguised enemies, and rocket boots for flight and enhanced jumping. He rides a specialized motorcycle named the Sidemachine, which he can control remotely and which is also capable of flight. Jiro often announces his presence by playing a melancholic tune on his signature red guitar, a sound his enemies have come to dread.
