Description
Bijinder, who is also known as Mari in her human guise, is an advanced android created by the criminal organization SHADOW. Her primary purpose was to serve as a weapon designed to defeat the hero Kikaider 01. Her design features a dual nature, allowing her to appear as a young woman named Mari or transform into her more aggressive and powerful robotic fighting form, Bijinder.

Created as part of a scheme by the villain Zadam, Mari was programmed with a specific directive to protect women and children from SHADOW's own androids. This seemingly benevolent behavior was a calculated deception intended to earn the trust of Kikaider 01, Ichiro, so she could ultimately lure him into a trap. In her Bijinder form, she was designed to be a remorseless assassin. Her personality is markedly split between her two forms; as the human-like Mari, she is portrayed as shy and kind-hearted, but when she becomes Bijinder, she adopts a more aggressive, sharp-tongued, and combat-ready demeanor.

Her motivations shift dramatically over the course of the story. Initially, she is a reluctant agent of SHADOW, internally conflicted about her mission to destroy Ichiro. This internal turmoil stems from her growing sense of right and wrong, which is further developed when Ichiro takes the risk of installing a partial conscience circuit inside her. This act allows her inherent kindness to override her destructive programming, leading to a definitive break from SHADOW. After her defection, her motivation becomes one of redemption and fighting against the organization that created her, forming a combat duo with Ichiro.

In the narrative, Bijinder serves as both a formidable antagonist and later a crucial ally and deuteragonist of the second half of the series. Her role is that of an action heroine who fights as effectively as Kikaider 01, often arriving to provide assistance in battle. Key relationships define her journey. Her bond with Ichiro is central; he is the one who sees her potential for good and gives her the conscience circuit that enables her freedom. She also shares a tragic, short-lived romance with a human named Eisuke Toge, who despises robots because his father was killed by one, creating a painful dynamic once she reveals her true nature. Another complex relationship is with Waruder, a rival android who follows a strict code of honor and eventually falls in love with her, even going so far as to remove a hidden hydrogen bomb from her body to save her life.

Throughout the series, Bijinder experiences significant development. She transforms from a programmed tool of evil into a hero with her own will, a path described as being as thorny as that of the original Kikaider. This rebellion is not easy; she is captured and tortured by SHADOW for her defiance, and they attempt to remove her conscience circuit to revert her to a loyal state, but she ultimately breaks free. Her development culminates in her joining Ichiro and the original Kikaider to launch a final assault on SHADOW's base, where she fights and defeats the powerful Hakaider.

As an android, Bijinder possesses a wide array of superhuman abilities, including immense strength, speed, and durability. Her most notable combat techniques include the Bijinder Laser, a powerful wave of energy fired from her chest, and a variety of powerful kicks. Her primary weapon is a harp, which can be used as a bow to fire explosive arrows. She can also convert her body into sparks to travel long distances, and her arrival is often heralded by the appearance of blooming flowers. She rides a special motorcycle called the Bijinder Machine, which is equipped with rockets. A major vulnerability in her design is a miniature hydrogen bomb implanted inside her body by SHADOW, which is set to detonate if the third button of her blouse is undone, though this bomb is later removed by Waruder.
