Description
Gill Hakaider is a primary antagonist from the anime and live-action series Android Kikaider 01. Created from the brain of the original series' main villain, Professor Gill, this character emerges as a powerful and ruthless android leader three years after the fall of the criminal empire DARK. Unlike the previous Hakaider, a conflicted android named Saburo, Gill Hakaider is the result of Professor Gill's brain being transplanted into a new Hakaider body, effectively making him a fusion of the evil professor's intellect with formidable robotic power.
In terms of personality, Gill Hakaider stands in stark contrast to the cool and nihilistic demeanor of his predecessor. He is characterized by an arrogant, cruel, and brutish nature. His primary motivations are world domination and the complete annihilation of the Kikaider Brothers, the series' protagonists. He is a megalomaniacal figure who manipulates others to achieve his goals and shows no hesitation in committing ruthless acts, such as murdering civilians to create chaos.
Within the story, Gill Hakaider first appears as the leader of the Hakaider Corps, a team of three other Hakaider units created from the brains of DARK's top scientists. He leads this group in an effort to kidnap his own son, Akira, who holds the key to activating a colossal weapon known as the Armageddon Lord or Giant Devil. After his initial defeat by Kikaider 01, he is rescued and becomes an executive for a rival evil organization called SHADOW, though he never fully submits to their authority and continues to pursue his own ambitions. This leads to a complex dynamic with his new master, Big Shadow, where he alternates between obedience and outright rebellion.
His key relationships are defined by conflict and manipulation. He is the sworn enemy of the heroic androids Kikaider 01 (Ichiro) and Kikaider (Jiro). He treats his own children, Akira and his twin sister Rumi, as tools for his schemes rather than family. He also has a notable rivalry with Bijinder, a female android created by SHADOW. Later in the series, after a defeat, he is captured and brainwashed by SHADOW, which leads to a forced allegiance and a surprising shift in his portrayal. During this period, his missions become more comical, involving absurd schemes like hoarding toilet paper and oranges to cause public panic, or reluctantly exterminating stray dogs to appease a subordinate's fear.
Gill Hakaider possesses a wide array of notable abilities. As an advanced combat android, he has enhanced strength and is armed with signature weapons, including the Hakaider Shot (a beam weapon), a Destruction Sword, and a whip. He has several special techniques, such as Satan Darkness, which envelops an area in dark clouds, and the ability to hypnotize opponents with his glowing eyes. One of his most formidable powers is transformation; he can morph into a massive Monster Robot called Black Dragon, which multiplies his power tenfold. He can also combine with the three other members of the Hakaider Corps to form the giant warrior Gattaider, achieving forty times his normal power. Later in the series, he gains a significant power-up by summoning the spirit of Professor Gill, which triples his strength and grants him new attacks like the Outlaw Kick and Magma Upper, as well as a new restraining weapon called the Iron Belt.
