Description
Akira is the second son of the villainous Professor Gill, making him a central figure in the conflict of the story. Because his father designed a powerful superweapon known as the Giant Devil, the blueprints for this robot were tattooed onto Akira's back, a secret that places him in constant danger. The Hakaider Squad and the evil organization SHADOW relentlessly pursue Akira to capture him and use the plans on his skin to complete the weapon.

As a young boy caught in a life-or-death struggle, Akira is portrayed as a vulnerable character, often fearful and distressed by the danger surrounding him. He demonstrates a desire to escape his fate, at one point attempting to remove the plans from his back by trying to enter a carwash or even attempting to drown himself to end his suffering. Despite this, he is resilient, and his situation evokes a strong protective instinct from the heroic androids who fight for him. He is sometimes referred to as a tagalong kid, as much of the plot revolves around keeping him safe from the forces that seek to exploit him.

Akira's role in the narrative is primarily that of a catalyst and a MacGuffin. His capture is the main objective of the antagonists, and his rescue drives the actions of the protagonists. The androids Jiro, also known as Kikaider, and Ichiro, known as Kikaider 01, are awakened and united in their mission to protect him from his own father. His brother, Hiroshi, possesses the other half of the Giant Devil blueprints on his own back, and the two siblings are connected by this shared, burdensome legacy.

His key relationships are defined by this conflict. He is initially under the care of a guardian named Rieko, who works to keep him hidden from Professor Gill and SHADOW. The androids Jiro and Ichiro become his primary protectors, with Ichiro in particular exhibiting a strong big brother instinct toward the boy, as his primary function is to keep Akira safe. Over the course of the story, Akira is captured by Hakaider and used to activate the Armageddon Lord, a giant robot that devastates a city. After the final confrontation in which Jiro defeats Professor Gill, Akira is left in the care of a monk scientist who had previously raised Ichiro and reactivated another android, Rei (Kikaider 00). As a human child, Akira does not possess any notable abilities or superpowers; his significance comes entirely from the knowledge encoded on his body and the danger it represents.
