Description
Dr. Kōmyōji, whose full name is often given as Den Kōmyōji in the manga and anime adaptations, is the brilliant robotics scientist responsible for the creation of the android Kikaider, as well as several other advanced robots that appear throughout the story. His background is marked by personal tragedy, which serves as the primary catalyst for his life's work. Before the events of the series, his eldest son, Ichiro, was killed in what seemed to be an accident. This loss drove Dr. Kōmyōji to dedicate himself to the development of artificial humans, seeking perhaps to understand life or to create something that could prevent such senseless death.

In terms of personality, Dr. Kōmyōji is generally depicted as a mild-mannered and humane individual, a stark contrast to the sinister forces he opposes. He possesses a gentle and sometimes humorous disposition, but this is underpinned by a strong sense of morality and responsibility as a scientist. This moral core prevents him from being swayed by evil, even when his life is directly threatened. He is also deeply empathetic, treating his robotic creations not as mere tools or weapons, but as if they were his own children. This paternal affection is most clearly demonstrated by his creation of the experimental "Conscience Circuit," also known as the GEMINI system, which he designed to grant an android the ability to simulate human emotions and distinguish between right and wrong. His love for music is another key trait; he enjoys playing instruments himself and programmed his robots, including Jiro, with the skills to play the guitar.

Dr. Kōmyōji's primary motivation shifts from grief-driven research to a desperate struggle for survival and atonement. After the death of his son, he became involved with the mysterious Professor Gill, who provided funding for his projects. Unbeknownst to him, this partnership was a trap; Gill was the leader of the evil organization DARK and sought to use the doctor's genius for world domination. When Dr. Kōmyōji discovered Gill's true intentions and that his new wife was a spy for DARK, he broke ties and began developing robots to oppose them, with the Conscience Circuit as the key element to ensure his creations would not become monsters.

The scientist's role in the story is that of the absent mentor and the prize for which the heroes and villains fight. At the very beginning of the series, he is abducted by DARK, setting the plot in motion. Before his capture, he managed to eject his incomplete android, Jiro (Kikaider), sending him to protect his two young children, Mitsuko and Masaru. For the majority of the narrative, Dr. Kōmyōji is a captive, forced by Professor Gill to create a series of war machines called Destructoids, which Jiro is then forced to battle. His physical body is eventually discarded, and his brain is cruelly implanted into the cyborg known as Saburo, or Hakaider, who is designed to be Kikaider's ultimate nemesis. This makes Dr. Kōmyōji a tragic figure, turned into a weapon against his own creation.

His key relationships are central to the emotional core of the story. His relationship with his children, Mitsuko and Masaru, is one of a loving but now-separated father who sent his greatest creation to protect them. His relationship with his android creations is exceptionally complex. He sees Jiro, Ichiro, and the others as his sons, making the fact that many of them are forced to fight and destroy each other a profound tragedy. Most important is his relationship with his nemesis, Professor Gill. Gill is not just a captor but a dark mirror, representing what Dr. Kōmyōji could become if he abandoned his ethics in the pursuit of power and scientific advancement.

The character undergoes a unique and harrowing form of development. He is reduced from a proactive genius to a disembodied brain, a helpless observer trapped inside the shell of a murderous cyborg, Hakaider. In this state, he is forced to witness the battles between his own "children." However, his powerful subconscious and his will to protect Jiro and his family manage to assert themselves. While his brain is inside Hakaider, Dr. Kōmyōji's subconscious resists orders to destroy Jiro and even works to repair the damaged android. Eventually, the heroes are able to retrieve his brain and transplant it back into his original, restored body, reuniting him with his family. After this ordeal, he is depicted as weakened but wiser, finally able to guide his children directly.

As a scientist, Dr. Kōmyōji's most notable ability is his unparalleled genius in robotics. He is capable of creating androids with near-human complexity. His signature achievement is the Conscience Circuit, a device so advanced that it verges on creating a true artificial soul, though he himself admits it was never truly perfected. His love of music also manifests as a practical skill; he is proficient with the guitar and trumpet, and this passion is intentionally woven into the fundamental programming of his androids. This fusion of science and art is what defines his legacy as a creator.
