Description
Carmine Spider is a Destructoid, a type of combat android created by the evil DARK organization, and serves as an antagonist in the anime Android Kikaider. This particular model is designed with an arachnid theme, featuring a face shaped like an inverted spider while possessing a humanoid body from the neck down. Standing at a height of 173 centimeters and weighing approximately 78 kilograms, Carmine Spider is a human-sized robot built for a specific and sinister purpose.
The primary mission assigned to Carmine Spider by DARKs leader, Professor Gill, is to collect blood from children. This blood is a crucial ingredient for a new DARK formula known as XR4, a serum intended to transform people into obedient zombies for the organization. The mission requires a very specific type, Rh-negative blood, which is found in only a small fraction of the population. Carmine Spider typically operates by stalking victims at night, using his fangs to inject a paralytic venom before draining their blood to be brought back to DARKs laboratory.
In combat, Carmine Spider relies on a set of specialized abilities derived from his spider motif. His primary weapon is the Spider Net, a strong, thread-like fluid he fires from his wrists to ensnare or strangle opponents. His fangs are hollow, functioning like syringes to inject venom or drain blood. A unique feature is his ability to continue controlling his hands even if they are severed from his body, allowing for a degree of detached manipulation.
During the main story, Carmine Spider attacks a child welfare center to capture a boy named Kenichi, who possesses the valuable Rh-negative blood type. He is confronted by the protagonist, Jiro, the android who can transform into Kikaider. In their first encounter, Carmine Spider is easily driven off when Jiro severs his hands with a double chop attack. He returns for a final confrontation, this time with support from Professor Gill, who uses a special flute to paralyze Jiro and prevent his transformation. However, Carmine Spiders own arrogance leads to his downfall. He attempts to cover Jiros face with his Spider Web, which inadvertently blocks out the sound of Gills flute. Freed from the paralysis, Jiro transforms into Kikaider and turns the tables on the monster, using the Spider Web to entangle him before destroying him with the Denji End attack. Later in the series, he is briefly revived along with other defeated Destructoids only to be immediately destroyed again, serving as a demonstration of a newer models power.
Beyond the original series, different versions of Carmine Spider appear in other adaptations of the Kikaider story. In the later anime adaptation, his design is more overtly spider-like, with eight arms and the ability to destroy vehicles with his webs. In other media, such as the novel and the Kikaider 02 story, he appears as a more traditional giant spider robot or as a minor antagonist. Regardless of the iteration, Carmine Spider consistently fills the role of a monster of the week, a unique and themed agent of DARK whose inherent arrogance and overconfidence often prove to be as dangerous to his own mission as the hero he faces.
