Description
Makoto Kino is the civilian identity of Sailor Jupiter, the third Sailor Guardian to be discovered by Usagi Tsukino in the narrative of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. Her background is marked by tragedy and resilience: her parents died in a plane crash when she was a child, leaving her to live alone and become entirely self-sufficient. This loss is the foundation of her fierce independence and her deep-seated need to care for others. Because of her tall stature and physical strength, she developed a reputation at school as a delinquent and was forced to transfer between schools frequently, often due to getting into fights to defend herself or others. When she is first introduced, she stands out not only for her height but also for wearing a different school uniform, as the standard one was unavailable in her size.

Makoto’s personality is defined by a striking duality that remains consistent across all versions of the story. She is simultaneously the most masculine and the most feminine of the Inner Sailor Guardians. On one side, she is physically powerful, tough, assertive, and capable of overpowering opponents with her bare hands, often using martial arts and raw strength. She is protective and fearless, willing to stand up to any threat to defend her friends. On the other side, she is deeply gentle, kind, and nurturing. She is passionate about traditionally domestic activities such as cooking, baking, gardening, and flower arranging, hobbies she pursues with genuine joy and skill. Her dream is to get married and one day own a shop that sells both cakes and flowers, reflecting her desire to combine her nurturing nature with her romantic aspirations. She is also sentimental and romantic, with a tendency to fall for boys who remind her of an older upperclassman from her past, a trait that shows her longing for connection and love.

Her motivations stem from a core need for belonging and protection. Having lost her parents and moved from school to school, she deeply values the friends she makes as a Sailor Guardian and is fiercely loyal to them, treating them as the family she lost. She is driven to protect Princess Serenity and the Earth, using her powers to fight evil. Her self-sufficiency is both a strength and a vulnerability; she is used to handling problems alone but learns to rely on her team.

Makoto serves as the physical powerhouse and a protective older-sister figure within the group of Inner Sailor Guardians. Her role is often that of the strongest in terms of brute force and resilience, acting as the group’s frontline defender. She is the coordinator of the team, bringing a stabilizing and caring presence that holds the others together. Her key relationship is with Usagi Tsukino, whose friendship breaks through her lonely exterior and gives her a sense of home. She shares a close, supportive bond with Ami Mizuno, as seen in moments of mutual encouragement and dancing together at a party. She also has a strong friendship with Minako Aino, bonding over their shared romantic interests and experiences as the last two members to join. In terms of romantic development, her most significant connection is with Motoki Furuhata; in the live-action series, they grow close and eventually become engaged by the end of the direct-to-DVD Special Act.

Throughout the series, Makoto undergoes meaningful development. She starts as a solitary and misunderstood girl who is used to fighting alone. Through her friendships with the other Guardians, she learns to trust others and allow herself to be cared for, not just the one doing the caring. She grows from a feared outsider into a beloved and integral member of a found family. Her development also includes the evolution of her Sailor Guardian powers. She gains the ability to access more powerful forms, such as Super Sailor Jupiter and eventually Eternal Sailor Jupiter, which grant her enhanced abilities and new attacks.

As Sailor Jupiter, her notable abilities are tied to her elemental affinities of wood and lightning. She possesses superhuman strength, far exceeding that of the other Inner Guardians, allowing her to lift grown men, stop falling pillars, or perform powerful physical strikes. Her primary offensive powers involve electrokinesis, including her signature Supreme Thunder attack, which calls down lightning strikes. She also has plant-based powers, such as the ability to manipulate flowers and oak leaves for attack, as seen in abilities like Jupiter Oak Evolution and Flower Hurricane. Her Guardian titles include Guardian of Protection, Herculean Jupiter, Guardian of Thunder and Courage, and Guardian of Caring. In her civilian form, she wears signature pink rose earrings and a green hair tie, accessories that remain consistent across her Sailor Guardian uniform. Her uniform is a sailor suit in green and pink with rose-shaped earrings, and in the manga and live-action series, she wears a belt with a small ball of potpourri. Her tiara initially had a short antenna that acts as a lightning rod.
