OVA
Description
Mafuyu Satō is one of the central figures in the story. He is a high school boy with an unkempt appearance, characterized by his pink-tinged hair and similarly colored eyes, and he often carries a Gibson ES-330 electric guitar. He is 173cm tall and was born on February 28. His name, Mafuyu, means midwinter, a detail that reflects the quiet and cold emotional state he often inhabits.

Mafuyu has a quiet, introverted, and reserved personality. He often seems blank or spaced out, which leads others to perceive him as someone who does not care about anything. This demeanor stems from a deep-seated difficulty in expressing himself and interacting with other people. He struggles to show emotions like laughter or sadness as others do, and in moments of high stress or confusion, his instinct is to run away from the situation. Despite this withdrawn nature, Mafuyu is surprisingly quick-witted and observant, possessing a sharpness and even a sarcastic edge that surfaces occasionally. He is also very straightforward in his speech, often taking things literally, and shows a diligent and committed side when it comes to the band.

The core of Mafuyu’s motivation is rooted in a profound tragedy. In the past, he witnessed the suicide of his childhood friend and lover, Yuki Yoshida, who hanged himself following a heated argument between the two. After Yuki's death, Mafuyu kept Yuki's broken guitar as a memento, unable to play it but unwilling to let it go. His initial persistence in asking fellow student Ritsuka Uenoyama to fix and then teach him the guitar is a direct result of his unresolved grief. He wants to use music as a way to convey the unfulfilled and tangled feelings he still holds for Yuki, and to find a way to express the pain and love he cannot put into words.

In the story, Mafuyu serves as the emotional catalyst that transforms the band. He joins Ritsuka’s band, which also includes Haruki Nakayama and Akihiko Kaji, as the vocalist and rhythm guitarist. His role is not just as a performer but as a lyricist, though he struggles immensely with this task. The central conflict of his early arc revolves around his inability to write lyrics for the band’s first live performance, as confronting his past feels impossible. His climactic performance, where he finally sings a song born from his memories of Yuki, is a pivotal moment that overwhelms the audience and serves as his emotional breakthrough.

Mafuyu’s key relationships define his journey. His relationship with Ritsuka Uenoyama begins with a simple request to fix a guitar string but deepens as Ritsuka becomes his teacher, bandmate, and eventually his boyfriend. Ritsuka is the first person to hear Mafuyu sing and is moved enough to insist he join the band, providing the stability and patience Mafuyu needs to heal. Yuki Yoshida remains an ever-present figure in Mafuyu’s mind; their relationship was intense and all-consuming, formed from a shared experience of being raised by single mothers, and his death is the trauma Mafuyu must overcome. He also has complicated relationships with his other childhood friends, Hiiragi Kashima and Shizusumi Yagi, who were part of Yuki’s band and from whom he has distanced himself due to the painful memories they carry. He is generally polite and amicable with his older bandmates, Haruki and Akihiko, who support him as he finds his place in the group.

Throughout the narrative, Mafuyu undergoes significant development. He starts as a ghost-like figure, simply carrying a broken guitar and sleeping on a school stairway. By engaging with music and allowing himself to be vulnerable with Ritsuka and the band, he begins to process his grief. He learns to play the guitar from scratch, proving to be a quick learner, and finds his voice as a singer. The creation of his first song and the subsequent breakdown and release after the live performance mark a turning point, allowing him to finally begin moving forward and accept a new relationship with Ritsuka.

Regarding notable abilities, Mafuyu’s primary talent is his extraordinary singing voice. He possesses an impressive falsetto that has a profound emotional impact on listeners, a quality that immediately captivates Ritsuka. Although he starts as a complete beginner on the guitar, he learns very quickly due to his dedication and natural aptitude, rapidly improving his skills to keep up with his more experienced bandmates. His ability to write lyrics is also notable, as his songs are direct, emotional expressions of his inner world, drawing from his personal trauma and memories.
