Description
Kyouji Murakami, also known as Rose Orphnoch, is a central antagonist in Kamen Rider 555. He is introduced as the stern, ambitious, and calculating acting director of the Smart Brain corporation’s Japan branch. His public persona is that of a charismatic, impeccably dressed corporate executive who speaks with cold precision and views humans primarily as tools or obstacles. Privately, he is a high-ranking Orphnoch, a member of the evolved human species that Smart Brain seeks to establish as the next dominant life form on Earth.
Murakami’s background before the events of the series is largely shrouded in mystery, but it is known that he rose through Smart Brain’s ranks due to his ruthlessness and unwavering belief in Orphnoch supremacy. Unlike many Orphnochs who struggle with their identity or perish from their unstable biology, Murakami embraces his nature without hesitation. He is a pure-blooded Orphnoch in terms of ideology if not necessarily origin, viewing humanity as a dying race that must be replaced.
Personality-wise, Murakami is defined by his arrogance, patience, and manipulative intelligence. He rarely raises his voice, preferring to let his actions and the fear he instills speak for themselves. He has a dry, cutting wit and often toys with his enemies, especially the Kamen Riders, whom he considers misguided or obsolete. Despite his calm demeanor, he is prone to a quiet, seething rage when his plans are thwarted, and he will destroy anyone who fails him without mercy. His loyalty is entirely to the concept of an Orphnoch-led world, not to individual allies.
Murakami’s primary motivation is to accelerate the extinction of humanity and secure an unassailable future for the Orphnoch. To this end, he orchestrates numerous schemes: deploying the Lucky Clover squad of elite Orphnochs, attempting to recover or destroy the Kamen Rider gears, and manipulating human institutions to serve Smart Brain. He sees the Rider Gears—the Faiz, Kaixa, and Delta belts—as double-edged tools: useful for eliminating threats but dangerous if wielded by humans or uncooperative Orphnochs. His personal goal is to consolidate Smart Brain’s power so completely that no force, human or Orphnoch, can challenge his vision.
In the story, Murakami serves as the primary face of corporate and ideological evil. While other Orphnochs act on instinct or desperation, Murakami acts with strategic purpose. He is directly responsible for many of the Riders’ hardships, including manipulating Masato Kusaka, undermining Takumi Inui’s trust in his allies, and ordering the elimination of any Orphnoch who refuses to follow Smart Brain’s doctrine. His role is not just as a fighter but as a puppet master who controls information, resources, and personnel.
Key relationships define much of his arc. He has a tense, contemptuous dynamic with Masato Kusaka, whom he tries to use as a weapon against Faiz while knowing Kusaka is too unpredictable to fully control. His relationship with Takumi Inui is adversarial but layered: Murakami recognizes Takumi’s strength as Faiz but despises him for protecting humans while being an Orphnoch. He also clashes with Naoya Kaido, another Orphnoch who rejects Smart Brain’s dogma, viewing him as a pathetic traitor to his own kind. Among the Lucky Clover, he treats them as valuable but expendable assets; his most trusted subordinate is generally Kitazaki (Dragon Orphnoch), whose raw power he respects despite Kitazaki’s childlike instability.
Development-wise, Murakami changes little in his core beliefs, but his situation deteriorates over the series. Initially a composed and untouchable executive, he becomes increasingly desperate as the Riders and rebel Orphnochs dismantle his plans. His arrogance leads him to underestimate Takumi’s resolve and the bonds between human and Orphnoch characters. By the final acts, his composure cracks, and he resorts to more direct and violent methods, culminating in his transformation into the Rose Orphnoch for decisive battles. His arc ends not with redemption but with the grim satisfaction of a zealot who would rather destroy everything than compromise—though he is ultimately defeated, his legacy of manipulation continues to affect the survivors.
As Rose Orphnoch, Murakami possesses formidable abilities. His Orphnoch form is elegant and floral in theme, with a vine-like motif. His primary power is the generation and control of razor-sharp rose petals that can shred steel and slice through Rider armor. He can also extend thorned vines from his body to bind and crush opponents. He is a fast and agile fighter, capable of holding his own against multiple Riders simultaneously. His signature attack involves scattering a storm of petals that home in on targets. In human form, he retains peak physical conditioning and is highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, though he rarely fights without transforming. Additionally, he has the typical Orphnoch ability to sense other Orphnochs and can emit a faint, sweet floral scent when agitated or preparing to transform. His weakness is the same as all Orphnochs: sustained damage in battle can accelerate the cellular decay that eventually turns Orphnochs into sand-like ash, though Murakami’s control over his form appears more stable than most.
