Description
Procyon, a name also written as Prokion in some romanizations, is one of the three central figures in the opening of the anime Galaxy Investigation 2100: Border Planet, together with his childhood friends Subaru and Mira. The three grew up together and were inseparable from an early age. A recurring memory in the story shows that when sweets of different sizes were shared, Subaru would immediately give the largest piece to Mira and, after a moment of hesitation, the middle piece to Procyon, a small detail that captures Procyon's quiet and modest place within the trio.
As the three became adults, both Procyon and Subaru fell in love with Mira, but Procyon was the one who confessed first and asked for her hand in marriage. After graduating from university, the two married. Procyon worked in space-connected duties; he is described as an astronaut, and also as an electronics technician serving at the spaceport. On the night of the wedding, he was called out to assist with the rescue of a ship involved in an accident. Inside the vessel he came upon an unknown substance, a virus that destroys the bonds between cells and causes the human body to dissolve. Merely touching it with the tip of a finger was enough to infect him. His condition deteriorated rapidly, and that same night, before Mira's eyes, his body dissolved and he died.
Because Mira might also have been infected, she was placed into cryogenic sleep to halt the progress of the illness, and Subaru devoted himself to traveling across the galaxy in search of the virus's origin so that a vaccine could be created. Procyon's death is therefore the event that sets the entire story in motion.
