TV Special
Description
Dr. Kenmochi is the adoptive father and guardian of the series' protagonist, Hosuke Sharaku. His life changed dramatically on a stormy night when a mysterious woman bearing a third eye on her forehead arrived at his home. She entrusted her infant son, Sharaku, to Kenmochi, promising him a long and prosperous life in return. The woman then fled into the night and was almost immediately struck and killed by lightning. Following this event, Kenmochi raised the boy as his own son.
As Sharaku grew older, Kenmochi observed a small third eye gradually forming on the boy's forehead. When this eye fully developed, Sharaku began to exhibit extraordinary intelligence combined with a malicious and dangerous personality. Concerned by these changes, Kenmochi devised a method to suppress these traits. He placed a cross-shaped bandage over the third eye, which effectively sealed its power. With the eye covered, Sharaku reverted to a docile, childlike state with ordinary intelligence and an obedient nature.
Professionally, Dr. Kenmochi is a man of science. He works as a doctor and also serves as an archaeology professor. His academic work is dedicated to uncovering ancient mysteries, which frequently involves investigating ruins connected to the ancient three-eyed civilization. For instance, he has sent Sharaku and the character Chiyoko Wato to examine artifacts at the Jumyoin residence in Kagoshima. Kenmochi is a rational and analytical individual, often prioritizing scientific inquiry and systematic research methods over emotional considerations. Because of his professional duties, he sometimes needs assistance caring for Sharaku and relies on his friend Higeoyaji, the owner of a ramen shop called Rairaiken, to provide supervision.
Dr. Kenmochi carries deep guilt stemming from a past incident in which a super-soldier experiment he was involved in led to numerous deaths. This guilt is a primary motivation for his later dedication to developing defensive technologies, including plans for an ultimate weapon to protect humanity from threats like alien invasions. He is determined to rectify his past failures through scientific advancement. As a professional acquaintance of an archaeologist named Professor Subuta, Kenmochi sometimes enlists Sharaku's help, specifically when the boy's third eye is exposed and his heightened intelligence is active, to interpret ancient texts related to archaeological discoveries.
The relationship between Dr. Kenmochi and Sharaku is complex and evolves throughout the story. It begins with paternal care, but transforms into conflict as Sharaku's third-eye powers pose increasing dangers. Kenmochi's decisions reflect a constant struggle between his desire to protect his adoptive son and the need to mitigate the global risks posed by Sharaku's connection to the three-eyed civilization. In a drastic attempt to permanently neutralize the boy's abilities, Kenmochi once considered surgically removing the third eye, believing this would prevent future harm. He also intervenes during major crises, such as persuading Sharaku to deactivate a spear-like weapon called the Red Condor, which had the potential to trigger ancient destructive forces.
Dr. Kenmochi continues to play a key role in deciphering the legacy of Sharaku's ancestors. He investigates ancient artifacts, such as metal pieces excavated from ruins that he identifies as being over 8,000 years old. When assembled, these pieces form a giant devil robot named Garon, a creation of the three-eyed civilization. His discovery of this robot underscores his ongoing efforts to understand and contain the threats posed by the ancient powers connected to his adopted son. Ultimately, Dr. Kenmochi's actions are consistently driven by a dual commitment to scientific responsibility and the containment of dangerous, ancient powers.
