Description
Ilkubo is a major antagonist from the anime series Futari wa Pretty Cure, serving as the formidable leader of the Dark Five and the most trusted right-hand man to the Dark King. As the final and most powerful general dispatched to retrieve the Prism Stones, his physical appearance is distinctive: he is a large, pale, and bald humanoid figure with pointed ears and dark-rimmed eyes reminiscent of the character Kiriya. He is typically seen wearing a white robe and carrying the purple Prism Stone.
In terms of personality, Ilkubo initially presents himself as a stern and authoritarian leader who demands discipline among his underlings, often scolding them for infighting or misbehavior while reminding them of the Dark King’s trust. Beneath this composed exterior lies a deeply classist and cynical worldview; he firmly believes that the concepts of equality are nonsense and that the masses exist only to serve their superiors. He holds an almost religious devotion to the Dark King, priding himself on being his strongest enforcer and executioner. Ilkubo is also notably persistent and sadistic, enjoying the intimidation of his enemies and preferring to finish battles with dramatic final blows. He can be smug and prone to underestimating the forces of light, a flaw that contributes to his eventual demise.
Ilkubo’s primary motivation is his absolute loyalty to the Dark King, whom he seeks to please by gathering the Prism Stones and feeding his master’s hunger for energy. His role in the story solidifies him as the final obstacle for the Pretty Cure. While other generals like Pisard, Gekidrago, Poisony, and Kiriya fail, Ilkubo is sent as a last resort. He waits until Kiriya is dealt with before engaging in serious battle against the heroines. He successfully manages to steal all seven Prism Stones and retreats to the Dusk Zone, where he transforms into a gigantic, monstrous indigo and silver creature with red eyes and tattered robes.
Key relationships define much of his narrative. As the right hand of the Dark King, Ilkubo serves with unparalleled dedication, yet his master ultimately shows him no gratitude or loyalty in return. In a pivotal moment, the Dark King kills Ilkubo himself, fearing that his servant might damage the precious Prism Stones during the fight with the Pretty Cure. His relationships with his fellow Dark Five generals are primarily professional, viewing them as subordinates to be managed and disciplined rather than as equals.
Ilkubo undergoes a notable development from a composed strategist to a desperate, rage-fueled monster. After his initial defeat and loss of the Prism Stone, he clings to life and returns in a far more powerful, rage-fueled form to stalk the Pretty Cure to the Garden of Light. Fueled by hatred and anger, this transformation makes him even more formidable, though his persistent sadism and flair for the dramatic ultimately lead to his final end.
His notable abilities are considerable. Ilkubo possesses powerful magic and immense fortitude, capable of blocking the Pretty Cure’s signature Marble Screw attack with his bare abilities, as well as deflecting close-combat strikes. However, his endurance is noted to be lower than that of his ally Gekidrago, as a direct hit from a powerful attack will still cause him significant pain. In addition to his combat skills, he can absorb energy from the Garden of Rainbows and wields the purple Prism Stone as a tool in his mission to serve the Dark King.
