Description
Porun, also written as Pollun in some English materials, is a fairy character from the Pretty Cure franchise who appears throughout the original series Futari wa Pretty Cure and its sequel Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart. He is the Prince of the Garden of Light, the realm from which the power of light used by the heroines originates.
In terms of background, Porun is sent to Earth after the conflict with the Dark Zone escalates and following the recovery of the Prism Stones. The Queen of the Garden of Light gives only a cryptic statement about his powers aiding the Pretty Cure, and his true purpose is revealed gradually. At a critical moment, when the Guardian known as Wisdom is in danger, Wisdom secretly places the power of the Rainbow Stones into Porun without his knowledge. This hidden gift gives Porun the ability to remain in his regular form and to communicate with the people of the Garden of Light. When such communication occurs, he transforms into a device that resembles a small computer, called the Pretty Commune or Rainbow Commune, and in Max Heart this role shifts to the Touch Commune. Through this same light power, he is also able to grant the Pretty Cure their Rainbow Bracelets.
Physically, Porun is a small white fairy who is reminiscent of a tiny dog or mouse, with mint-green highlights and a furry neck. He has an orb on his tail that somewhat resembles a computer mouse, long heart-shaped highlights on his ears, and pointed highlights around his eyes. He has a tendency to end his sentences with the sound "popo."
His personality is strongly childlike. Porun is spoiled, extremely selfish, and tends to think only of himself, with a great deal of restless energy. He can be stubborn to the point of throwing tantrums, sometimes lying on the floor and whining until he gets what he wants, and he frequently annoys the older fairy Mepple. The fairy Mipple is often the one who has to calm him down and manage his difficult moods. His behavior is best understood as that of a very young child who does not yet fully grasp other people's perspectives, which makes him demanding but also endearing in his innocence.
Porun's motivations are tied to his role as a child prince who seeks attention, affection, and entertainment. Beneath his self-centered surface, his presence is essential to the heroines because he channels the light that strengthens them and enables their most powerful transformations. His role in the story evolves across the two series. In the first series, he lives predominantly with Nagisa Misumi and works alongside the other fairies to support the Pretty Cure in their battles. After the fight against the Dark King, he falls into a deep slumber. In Max Heart, he awakens and meets Hikari Kujou, and he comes to live predominantly with her. He grants Hikari a new form and becomes the fairy associated with her transformation into Shiny Luminous, while continuing to aid the team in their efforts to restore the Queen of the Garden of Light.
His key relationships shape much of his development. With Nagisa, he shares a caretakerlike dynamic, as she is the one who looks after him for much of the first series. With Mepple, he has a constant and often comedic rivalry, since his noisy and demanding behavior is a frequent source of irritation. Mipple acts as a maternal figure who soothes him when he becomes unreasonable. In Max Heart, his bond with Hikari is especially important, as she becomes his new companion and he plays a central part in supporting her role as Shiny Luminous. He also has a younger sister named Lulun, and his interactions with her reveal a more protective and caring side, as he takes on the responsibility of watching over her during their adventures together.
Over the course of the story, Porun develops from a purely spoiled and demanding prince into a more dependable ally, though he never fully loses his childish nature. Through his experiences on Earth and his relationships with Hikari and Lulun, he shows increasing concern for others while retaining the playful energy that defines him. His notable abilities include transforming into a communication device for the Garden of Light, granting the Pretty Cure the power of the Rainbow Bracelets, and serving as a vessel for the Rainbow Stones, making him an indispensable source of light for the heroines throughout both series.
