Description
Chito is a black cat who serves as the familiar to Makoto, the main protagonist. Contrary to being a simple pet, Chito is better understood as a magical companion who has been partnered with Makoto for her training as a witch. Despite her small and youthful appearance, Chito is actually seventeen years old, which makes her older than most of the human characters in the story. This age reflects the nature of witches’ familiars, who are not bound by the same rules as ordinary animals and age differently.

Chito’s personality is marked by a quiet yet distinct mischievousness and a streak of pride. She is often described as a silent snarker, as only witches like Makoto and her sister Akane can understand her speech. To everyone else, including the audience, her communication is limited to standard cat meows and, more frequently, highly expressive deadpan facial expressions that convey her attitude clearly. She enjoys small adventures and has a notable habit of taunting dogs, a form of entertainment that highlights her cunning and slightly playful nature. Chito is also sensitive about her age and weight; when Nao casually comments that she has gained weight, Chito responds by climbing onto Nao’s shoulders and sitting on her, a clear demonstration that she understands human speech and is not above seeking petty revenge.

Her primary role in the story is as Makoto’s familiar, which involves being a constant companion and an assistant in magical matters. However, she also occasionally acts as a guide or a living navigation system, although her destinations are not always what Makoto expects, sometimes leading to the dog teasing rather than a useful location. Her relationship with Makoto is central to her existence as a familiar, and she is portrayed as being particularly close to the young cousin Chinatsu, whom she is often seen curled up with while sleeping. While she can initially be uncooperative with magical practice, she can be persuaded with positive reinforcement such as tasty treats.

Regarding her development, Chito does not undergo a dramatic personality change but is part of the story’s subtle, slice-of-life progression. An example of this is her gradual willingness to work with Makoto on spells when food is offered as a motivator, suggesting a pragmatic side that can be negotiated with. Her notable abilities stem from her nature as a familiar. While her meows are unintelligible to non-witches, she is a fully sapient being capable of complex thought and speech understood by those with magical affinity. It is explained that Chito is not truly a cat in the biological sense but a cognizant magical being that has taken the form of a cat, which accounts for her longevity and intelligence.
