Description
Kei Kuramoto is a fifteen-year-old boy who lives in a rural area of Aomori Prefecture. He is the older brother of Chinatsu Kuramoto and a second cousin to Makoto Kowata, a young witch who comes to live with his family to attend high school and continue her magical training. Physically, Kei is a tall teenager with short black hair and blue eyes.

Kei has a calm and collected personality, often displaying a gentle and patient demeanor. He is known for being practical and self-sufficient, possessing a surprisingly high level of domestic skill, particularly in cooking. He can prepare delicious meals from simple ingredients and often shares useful cooking tips with those around him. Kei also has knowledge of farming, a natural result of his family's agricultural background, and is comfortable with physical labor like tending fields. Despite his many practical abilities, he has a humble view of his own talents, believing he is not particularly good at cooking even though others recognize his skill. One of his few notable weaknesses is a dislike or poor handling of ghosts and supernatural entities, which provides a contrast to the magical elements that Makoto introduces into his daily life.

Within the story, Kei serves as a grounded anchor to the everyday world of the countryside, contrasting with the magical experiences of his cousin. His role is largely supportive, as he helps Makoto navigate her new environment. For instance, he ensures she does not get lost on her way to school and assists her in cultivating a vegetable garden for her witch training. He often accompanies Makoto and his younger sister Chinatsu on various errands and adventures, such as gathering wild herbs in the mountains, visiting a mysterious hidden café, or tending to apple trees. He is also a good friend to his classmate, Nao Ishiwatari, and the two of them frequently interact with Makoto as a group.

Kei is characterized by his lack of overt interest in romance, which stands out in contrast to typical teenage characters in similar settings. The story does not focus on romantic subplots for him, and he is generally not shown to be conscious of the female characters around him, including his cousins and Nao. However, he does mention that a fortune teller named Inukai, who has a magical affliction that gives her a dog's face during the day, might be his type, which is the most direct acknowledgment of his personal preferences in the series.

His motivations are quietly woven into his everyday life. While he is the son of a farming family, he is also a student who enjoys watching several movies a day and has expressed a desire to become a film director. His immediate goal is to start a film production club at his school to make short films. His parents support him in this, encouraging him to pursue what he wants to do rather than feeling obligated to take over the family farm. This ambition shows a thoughtful side to his personality, as he contemplates his future path while still being fully present and helpful in his current life. His character remains largely consistent throughout the series, developing subtly through his growing involvement in Makoto's magical world and his own personal projects.
