Description
Chinatsu Kuramoto is a nine-year-old girl who serves as one of the main characters. She is the daughter of Keiji and Nana Kuramoto, the younger sister of Kei Kuramoto, and the cousin of the witch Makoto Kowata. Chinatsu is physically characterized by her black hair which she typically wears in pigtails, her grey eyes, and her tan skin. She stands at 127 cm tall.
In terms of personality, Chinatsu acts very much like a typical young girl. She is usually cheerful and full of energy, displaying a natural curiosity about the world around her. Her behavior and attitude consistently ring true to a specific kind of enthusiastic child. Initially, she was shy and a little reluctant around Makoto, but after discovering Makoto is a witch, she quickly warmed up and came to view her as an older sister figure. While generally kind and willing to help others, Chinatsu can also act spoiled and a bit demanding on occasion, such as when she tried to negotiate a donut purchase in exchange for giving Makoto a tour. She has a love for sweets and enjoys playing pranks, like using her magical abilities to squirt people with water.
Chinatsu's primary motivation throughout the story is her growing longing to become a witch. After witnessing magic firsthand, she becomes intensely curious and expresses a strong desire to learn magic herself, eventually becoming an apprentice witch under Makoto's older sister, Akane Kowata. Her role in the story is largely that of an audience surrogate, experiencing both the magical and rural sides of the world alongside the viewer. She acts as a mood maker, bringing a sense of wonder and energy to the otherwise laid-back narrative, and her innocent perspective often serves as a catalyst for magical exploration and demonstrations.
Chinatsu's key relationships are primarily within her family and the magical community. She is very close to her brother Kei, who accepts the existence of magic quite quickly. She looks up to Makoto, affectionately calling her "big sis Mako," and the two share a sisterly bond. Her most significant relationship is with Akane, who becomes her teacher and mentor as her apprentice witch; the two often interact like best friends. Chinatsu also becomes friends with the fortune teller Inukai, and she learns to play checkers from a girl named Nats Asagiri, who also introduces the rule that "the loser takes a beating".
Chinatsu undergoes a notable character development arc, transforming from an ordinary girl with no magical ability into a witch-in-training. It is established that it is quite difficult, if not impossible, for an ordinary person to become a witch, as witches are typically born with the ability. However, due to Chinatsu's strong wish to use magic, the spirit Hamabe collected a large amount of mana into its teeth, and by wearing a ring containing that mana, Chinatsu was able to perform simple magic, effectively bypassing her lack of personal mana. This ring acts as her channeling item. Under Akane's guidance and by using a basic educational magic book given by the spirit Enigumo, she begins learning magic one step at a time, with Akane focusing on helping Chinatsu become familiar with magic itself rather than just teaching her spells directly. This process of expanding her common sense to accept the unreal as basic reality is a crucial part of her development. She later recruits Hamabe as her own familiar.
Chinatsu's notable abilities, though limited at first, develop over time. Initially, using the ring containing Hamabe's mana, she could shoot water from her hand like a squirt gun. As her training progresses, she demonstrates the ability to shoot fire from her hand as well. Her development is significant enough that the Witch Association is said to be paying attention to her future, as she may play an important role in guiding another child towards important decisions.
