Description
Nao Ishiwatari is a fifteen-year-old high school student and one of the main characters in the anime. She is the childhood friend of Kei Kuramoto and becomes a classmate and close friend of Makoto Kowata after Makoto moves to the countryside. Nao lives with her parents and helps run their family-owned liquor store. She has brown hair and brown eyes and is often seen in her school uniform. Nao is a kind and considerate person, but she also tends to be self-critical and sometimes judges herself harshly. She is grounded and practical, often serving as the voice of common sense among her friends. Because of this, she is sometimes embarrassed or bewildered by the casual acceptance of magic and unusual events shown by Kei and his younger sister Chinatsu, as well as by Makoto's witch abilities. Nao does not have any magical powers herself; she is a regular human who initially feels awkward around witchcraft but gradually becomes more comfortable with it as she spends time with Makoto. Her role in the story is that of a supportive friend who provides a normal, everyday perspective, helping to ground the series' gentle fantasy elements. Her relationships are central to the story: she shares a long history with Kei, which leads Makoto's older sister Akane to playfully suggest they are a couple, though Nao tends to react with shyness or denial. With Makoto, Nao forms a warm friendship and often guides her around town or helps her navigate daily life. Over the course of the series, Nao shows subtle growth in accepting the extraordinary aspects of Makoto's world, but she remains primarily a relatable, down-to-earth character who values her friends and ordinary routines.
