Description
Eren Jäger, known in some translations as Eren Yeager, is the central protagonist of the narrative. He is introduced as a young boy living in the Shiganshina District, located on the southern edge of Wall Maria. Born to Grisha and Carla Jäger, his life is forever altered in the year 845 when two intelligent Titans, the Colossal and the Armored, breach the wall, leading to a catastrophic invasion by Titans. During this event, Eren helplessly witnesses his mother being devoured by a Smiling Titan, an event that ignites an intense and lifelong hatred for the creatures and a sworn oath to eradicate every single one of them.

Personality-wise, Eren is best described as hardheaded, passionate, and intensely impulsive. These traits are the direct attributes of his strong determination to protect mankind and achieve freedom. Even as a child, he scorned those content to live within the walls, comparing them to complacent livestock and dreaming of the outside world after seeing a book brought by his best friend, Armin Arlert. He possesses a marked lack of self-restraint and a fierce temper, which often leads him into trouble but also fuels his relentless drive. His hatred for Titans is so consuming that he shows little fear toward them, earning him the nickname suicidal bastard among his fellow cadets. This rage, however, is balanced by a deep, selfless loyalty to his friends. He risks his life to save Armin and Mikasa Ackermann without hesitation, and his protectiveness stems from a childhood where he brutally defended strangers from harm, as seen when he killed human traffickers to rescue Mikasa.

Eren's primary motivation evolves drastically throughout the story. Initially, it is simple revenge: to kill all Titans to avenge his mother and reclaim humanity's freedom. As he grows and learns the truth about the world beyond the walls via the memories in his father's basement, his objective shifts. He discovers that the Titans are actually transformed humans from the race of Subjects of Ymir, and that humanity does not just survive behind the walls but thrives across the sea in the nation of Marley, which views the island of Paradis as a threat. Consequently, Eren’s motivation transforms from eradicating monsters to protecting his home island by annihilating his enemies on the other side of the sea, leading him to question if killing everyone on the other side would finally grant them freedom.

In the story, Eren enlists in the 104th Training Corps, graduating as the fifth-best soldier, and subsequently joins the Survey Corps. He quickly becomes a vital asset to humanity due to his unique ability to transform into a Titan, but he is also a source of constant danger and political intrigue. His role shifts from a soldier fighting for survival to a key player in the conflict between Eldia and Marley. Eventually, he becomes the leader of the Jaegerist faction, manipulating events from behind the scenes to push his plan for the Rumbling forward, transforming from a reckless hero into a figure that many consider the story's primary antagonist.

His key relationships are foundational to the plot. His bond with Armin Arlert is based on shared dreams and intellectual reliance; Armin provides the strategic thinking that Eren lacks. His relationship with Mikasa Ackermann is complex, defined by her fierce loyalty and his deep care for her, though at times he resents her protective nature. His father, Grisha Jäger, sets Eren on his path by giving him the key to the basement and injecting him with the Titan serum that grants him his powers, while his half-brother, Zeke Jäger, becomes a central foil in the final arcs regarding the future of the Eldian people.

Eren undergoes a profound development, evolving from a furious, emotionally driven child into a cold, calculating, and world-weary young man. The turning point occurs when he kisses Historia Reiss’s hand, unlocking suppressed memories of his father and glimpses of the future, which hardens his resolve. He infiltrates Marley, adopts a persona of a wounded soldier, and launches a devastating attack that kills countless civilians, including children, signaling his shift away from conventional morality. He accepts the role of a villain to achieve his goal, demonstrating a willingness to sacrifice his humanity for a specific vision of freedom for his friends and Paradis.

Notably, Eren possesses the ability to transform into several Titans. His primary form is the Attack Titan, a 15-meter-tall, muscular creature with long black hair and a lipless mouth that exposes jagged teeth. He later gains the powers of the Founding Titan, which requires royal blood to fully control Subjects of Ymir and the Wall Titans, and the War Hammer Titan, which allows him to create hardened structures and weapons. His standard abilities include enhanced strength and endurance, near-instantaneous regeneration of his Titan body and human limbs, and the hardening of his skin. His unique power as the Attack Titan is the ability to see future memories of his successors, which he uses to guide his actions and manipulate his father from the past.
