Description
Marlo Freudenberg is a supporting character in the anime adaptation of Attack on Titan, introduced during the third season as a young recruit of the Military Police Brigade. He stands out among his peers due to his tall, lean frame, a diamond-shaped face with a sharp aquiline nose, intense gray eyes, and a characteristic black bowl-cut hairstyle. He is almost always seen wearing his Military Police uniform or, later, the attire of the Scout Regiment, and his expression rarely loses a stoic, serious composure.
Born and raised within the walls, Marlo graduated from the 104th Training Corps before joining the Military Police. Unlike the vast majority of soldiers who seek a place in the Military Police for the safety and comfort it offers inside the innermost walls, Marlo’s motivation is deeply idealistic: he genuinely wishes to uphold justice and reform the corrupt system from within. This earnest conviction often leads him to clash with his fellow officer Hitch Dreyse, who finds his naivety amusing. Marlo is acutely aware of the moral compromises required to rise through the ranks, confessing a willingness to act like scum in order to gain the influence needed to effect change. In this regard, his fierce dedication to his principles draws comparisons to Eren Yeager, a parallel noted by those who know both young men.
In the story, Marlo serves as a rookie Military Police officer stationed in the Stohess District, working alongside Annie Leonhart in the early stages of the uprising arc. The anime adds extra scenes and dialogue between Marlo and Annie, deepening his role as a witness to the political intrigue within the walls. During the operation to capture the Female Titan, Marlo and his squad are tasked with guarding the Survey Corps’ horses and defending them from approaching Titans. In the ensuing chaos, he quickly emerges as the de facto leader of his fellow recruits, his comrades looking to him for clear instructions. Later, disillusioned by the corruption he had hoped to fight and galvanized by the true threat posed by Titans and Marley, Marlo transfers from the Military Police to the Scout Regiment. His final appearance occurs during the assault on the Beast Titan in Shiganshina District, where he fights valiantly and ultimately gives his life in the struggle.
Marlo’s key relationships include his workplace friction with Hitch Dreyse, who often teases him, and his cooperation with Annie Leonhart during his time in the Military Police. Within the Scout Regiment, he gains the respect of Captain Levi and other veterans for his bravery and willingness to sacrifice. His development traces a path from a naive, reform-minded policeman to a soldier who fully embraces the lethal reality of the fight for humanity, culminating in a selfless death that honors his ideals. In terms of abilities, Marlo is a competent soldier proficient with the standard Three-Dimensional Maneuver Gear and blades, though he does not display any extraordinary combat prowess beyond that expected of a trained recruit. His greatest assets remain his unwavering sense of justice, his capacity for leadership under pressure, and his eventual courage to abandon personal safety for a cause greater than himself.
