Description
The Beast Titan is one of the Nine Titans, a class of intelligent Titan shifters, and its holder during the main events of the story is Zeke Yeager. Zeke is the half-brother of Eren Yeager, sharing the same father, Grisha Yeager. His mother, Dina Fritz, was a descendant of the royal family, a lineage that grants him unique and formidable powers. Before Zeke, the Beast Titan was held by Tom Ksaver, a researcher who became a mentor figure to the young Zeke.
In its form under Zeke, the Beast Titan stands approximately seventeen meters tall, making it slightly larger than the Armored and Attack Titans. Its appearance is distinct from other Titans, resembling a large, muscular ape or monkey with long arms, dark fur covering most of its body, and a human-like face. This animalistic form is a defining trait of the Titan, though it can vary between different inheritors, taking on the characteristics of different creatures.
Zeke Yeager's personality is defined by a cold, calculating, and ruthless intelligence. He is a natural leader who serves as the War Chief of Marley's Warrior unit, commanding shifters like Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Hoover. While he appears calm and curious, he is also profoundly sadistic, showing detached amusement as his enemies are devoured. His primary motivation is not merely victory in war but the execution of a radical plan he conceived with Tom Ksaver: the euthanization of the Eldian people. He believes that allowing his race to die out peacefully is the only way to end the cycle of hatred and suffering they endure, framing his horrifying actions as a form of salvation.
The Beast Titan's role in the story is that of a major antagonist and a catalyst for some of the Survey Corps' most devastating defeats. It first appears during the invasion of Wall Rose, where it demonstrates its intelligence by attempting to communicate with a soldier and command other Titans. It later plays a pivotal role in the Battle of Shiganshina, where its ranged assault annihilates Commander Erwin Smith and most of the Survey Corps charge. Beyond being a physical threat, its relationship with Eren Yeager as his elder brother adds a complex emotional and ideological layer to the final arcs of the narrative.
Key relationships define Zeke's path. His bond with his mentor, Tom Ksaver, was the most positive of his life, and he inherited both the Beast Titan and his genocidal plan from him. In contrast, his relationship with his biological parents was toxic; feeling abandoned and betrayed by their revolutionary ambitions, Zeke reported them to the Marleyan authorities. Within the Warrior unit, he is a respected but feared commander to Reiner Braun. His primary adversary within the Survey Corps is Captain Levi, who consistently defeats him in combat, creating a rivalry based on mutual respect and lethal intent.
Zeke’s development is a tragic descent from an unloved child seeking approval into a zealous ideologue. After betraying his parents, he came to believe that Eldian existence itself was the problem. His experiences shaped him into a character who commits atrocities—such as transforming an entire village into Titans—while genuinely believing he is working toward a merciful end to suffering.
The Beast Titan possesses several notable abilities that make it a devastating weapon. In Zeke's hands, it has incredibly powerful and precise throwing skills, capable of hurling crushed boulders at supersonic speeds to destroy entire squadrons and naval fleets. Like other shifters, it can regenerate from wounds and harden its skin to create a protective crystalline shell, though this hardening is not invulnerable to anti-Titan weaponry like Thunder Spears.
Most significantly, due to Zeke's royal blood, the Beast Titan has the ability to create and control Pure Titans. Zeke can transform any Subject of Ymir who has ingested his spinal fluid into a Titan simply by letting out a loud scream. Furthermore, he can exert his will over these newly created Titans and others, commanding them to move, attack, or remain still, though this control is not absolute and can be resisted.
