Description
Eren Jaeger is the central protagonist of the Attack on Titan narrative, a character whose journey begins in the Shiganshina District, which is located on the southern edge of Wall Maria. He is the only son of Grisha and Carla Jaeger. As a child, Eren lived in this district until the year 845, when the Colossal and Armored Titans breached the Wall, leading to a catastrophic invasion. During this incident, Eren witnessed his mother being devoured by a smiling Titan, an event that became the primary foundation for his deep-seated hatred towards these creatures and his sworn oath to eliminate every single one of them.

Eren is characterized by a personality that is hardheaded, strong-willed, passionate, and deeply impulsive. From a young age, he possessed an intense desire to see the outside world beyond the walls, a dream inspired by a book shown to him by his friend Armin Arlert. This longing for freedom led him to develop a scornful attitude towards those content to live within the confines of the Walls, whom he compared to complacent livestock. His lack of self-restraint and a furious temper often drive him into reckless situations. He is known for thinking with his heart rather than his head, a trait that can be both a source of his greatest strength and a critical vulnerability. His overwhelming rage is born from a sense of weakness and failure, particularly his inability to save his mother, which fuels his relentless crusade against the Titans.

His central motivations evolve significantly over the course of the story. Initially, his sole motivation is revenge against the Titans and the reclamation of humanity's freedom. However, after learning the truth about his world—that humanity thrives beyond the walls and that the Titans are actually transformed subjects of the Eldian people—his goal shifts. Upon discovering the history of Eldia and Marley and unlocking his father's memories, Eren vows to free his home from what he perceives as its true enemy: the rest of humanity that lives across the sea. This leads him to a philosophy where he believes that if someone tries to take away his freedom, he will not hesitate to take away theirs, ultimately driving him towards the catastrophic plan known as the Rumbling.

In the structure of the military, Eren enlists in the 104th Cadet Corps alongside his childhood friends, Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert. He graduates fifth in his class, a testament to his intense determination and perseverance, even if he lacks natural talent. His primary motivation for joining is to eventually be assigned to the Survey Corps, the elite group of soldiers who venture outside the Walls to fight Titans directly. His role in the story transforms from a soldier fighting for humanity to a key figure in uncovering the political and historical secrets of his world, and finally to a controversial antagonist figure who acts on his own accord to protect his people, often putting him in direct conflict with former comrades.

The key relationships in Eren's life are paramount to his character. His bond with Mikasa Ackerman is complex; she is both an adoptive sister and a fierce protector, though Eren often chafes against her overprotectiveness. The author has described their relationship as one he intentionally wrote to avoid the concept of fated soulmates, often depicting them as becoming estranged. His friendship with Armin Arlert is foundational, as Armin’s intellectual curiosity and dreams of the outside world originally gave Eren a goal beyond revenge. Despite later diverging in their moral perspectives, this bond remains one of the story's emotional cores. Eren's relationship with his father, Grisha, is defined by trauma and manipulation, as Grisha injected Eren with the Titan serum and entrusted him with the key to the basement. He is also the younger paternal half-brother of Zeke Jaeger, with whom he forms a reluctant alliance based on their shared bloodline, though their ultimate goals for the Eldian people are in direct opposition.

Eren undergoes a profound and tragic character development. Initially presented as a typical hot-headed hero seeking vengeance, his worldview is gradually shattered as he experiences betrayal from comrades like Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Hoover, and as he inherits the memories of his father and the Attack Titan. This knowledge forces him to confront the grim reality that the enemy is not a monstrous "other" but a world that fears and hates his race. After seeing the sea, which was once his symbol of freedom, his reaction is not joy but despair, as he realizes that beyond the ocean lies an enemy that must be destroyed for him to achieve his version of freedom. Consequently, he transforms from a righteous soldier into a calculating, grim, and seemingly ruthless individual who commits acts of mass destruction, embodying a "good-guy-gone-bad" arc driven by pain and a desperate, isolated sense of purpose.

Eren possesses several notable abilities. As a human, he is proficient in hand-to-hand combat, ranking second in the 104th Cadet Corps in this discipline, and has considerable skill with the Vertical Maneuvering Equipment, despite his initial struggles. His most defining ability is the power to transform into a Titan. By injuring himself with a strong will to achieve a specific goal, he transforms into the Attack Titan, a 15-meter-tall, lean and muscular creature with pointed ears and a skeleton-like maw. This form possesses immense physical strength, enhanced endurance, and a powerful regenerative ability that can heal lost limbs within minutes. After consuming a special serum, he acquired the Hardening ability, allowing his Titan form to crystallize its skin into an armor-like substance for offensive and defensive purposes. He later inherits the War Hammer Titan, granting him additional abilities to create weapons from hardened material. Most crucially, he possesses the Founding Titan, which allows him to control other Titans and Subjects of Ymir, though this power is traditionally restricted without royal blood. Through the Attack Titan's unique ability, he can also send memories back to previous inheritors, influencing past events to shape his desired future.
