Description
Kagato is a primary antagonist in the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki continuity, known as a former student of Washu Hakubi, the universe's greatest scientific genius. In this capacity, he assisted Washu in the creation of her daughter Ryoko and the construction of the massive battleship Sōja. His past is directly tied to betrayal, as he ultimately imprisoned his mentor within her own ship, stole credit for her creations, and commandeered the Sōja for himself, beginning a five-thousand-year reign of pillaging across the galaxy.
Kagato is driven by an amoral and ambitious curiosity, fixated on locating a legendary artifact said to hold the greatest energy in the universe. He is not portrayed as a psychopath who kills for pleasure, but he holds mortal life in utter contempt, considering other beings worthless and little more than dust. He has no qualms about destroying populated worlds or causing mass casualties if it serves his scientific inquiries or removes obstacles. He earned the notorious nickname Ruins Buster after destroying over three thousand archaeological sites, stealing invaluable cultural artifacts and causing immense loss of life, which placed him at the top of the Galaxy Police's most wanted list.
Within the story, Kagato serves as the dark reflection of Washu's genius and the direct source of Ryoko's tragic past. He maintained a powerful psychic hold over Ryoko through three gems that served as her energy source, using her as a puppet to execute his orders and pillage the galaxy. His primary goal during the events on Earth is to reclaim his property—Ryoko and the gems—and to unlock the secret power held by the Jurai royal family. He recognizes the Masaki family sword as the key to this power and seeks to claim it, leading to a direct conflict with Tenchi and his grandfather, Yosho.
Key relationships define Kagato's role in the narrative. His connection to Washu is one of betrayer and captive, holding his former teacher prisoner within the Sōja for millennia while using her inventions for his own gain. His relationship with Ryoko is purely manipulative; he views her as a defective tool and does not hesitate to discard her when she is no longer useful. He holds a grudging respect for Yosho as a rival who once thwarted him. Later expansions of the lore reveal that Kagato was originally a hermaphrodite created as a clone of one of Washu's friends, who discarded his female half out of spite for her gentle nature. This female half would later reside within the character Noike, adding a complex layer to his already multifaceted origin.
In terms of development, Kagato remains a static character defined by his arrogance and intellectual superiority. He does not undergo a moral transformation or redemption arc. His most notable character moment occurs during his final confrontation with Tenchi. After Tenchi manifests his own Light Hawk Wings, a power Kagato believed impossible for a single entity, the villain is bisected by Tenchi's sword. In his final moments, Kagato does not rage against his defeat. Instead, he maintains his composure, acknowledging the brilliance of the battle and Tenchi's power with a calm, almost academic intrigue, effectively becoming a graceful loser who faces his death with dignity.
Kagato possesses formidable abilities that make him a significant threat. He shares many superhuman traits with both Washu and Ryoko, including teleportation, telekinesis, and accelerated regeneration. His regenerative capabilities are notably faster than Ryoko's, able to reattach or regrow limbs within seconds. He manifests powerful energy swords and projectiles, which are distinctively colored a mellow green rather than the more common fiery orange. His very presence on a planet is said to cause localized temperature drops, leading to snow. He is a skilled swordsman, able to fight on par with the Jurai prince Yosho. His most dangerous asset is his intellect as a mad scientist, allowing him to construct massive energy-draining systems and manipulate the power of Ryoko's gems to threaten the destruction of entire planets. Ultimately, despite his vast power, he is unable to regenerate from the wounds inflicted by Tenchi's Light Hawk Wings, proving that the power he sought was beyond his own grasp to control.
