Description
Chrono Shindō is the main protagonist of the anime Cardfight!! Vanguard G. He is a middle school student who, before discovering the card game, is characterized by a deep sense of apathy and social isolation. Having grown up in an orphanage after his mother died shortly after his birth and his father disappeared, Chrono developed a loner complex and a very low opinion of himself, feeling that he possessed nothing of value. He was eventually adopted by his aunt, Mikuru, but often avoided her so as not to feel like a burden, and his primary goal was to become independent as soon as possible. At school, his cold expression, blunt manner of speaking, and tendency to solve problems with violence gave him a delinquent reputation, causing his classmates to fear him and leaving him with no friends.
Chrono's life changes dramatically when he finds a mysterious deck of Vanguard cards and a hand-drawn map in his school locker. Following the map, he arrives at a card shop called Card Capital 2, where he meets the energetic shop clerk, Kamui Katsuragi. Although initially reluctant because the card game was not available to him at his orphanage, Chrono agrees to a match after being intrigued that one of the cards shares part of his name. During his first fight, he is fascinated by the game and its lore, and he hears the voice of a creature from the planet Cray, successfully performing a powerful Stride maneuver to win. This victory ignites a passion in him, marking the first time he has become excited about anything, and he decides to learn more about Vanguard and the origin of his Gear Chronicle deck.
Over the course of the series, Chrono’s personality undergoes a significant transformation. While he remains a quiet and sometimes awkward individual, he becomes more passionate, rowdy, and enthusiastic when doing something he enjoys. His social skills slowly improve as he interacts with more people through Vanguard, though he can still come across as blunt or unintentionally intimidating. Chrono is shown to be very stubborn, rash, and selfless, often acting on impulse to help his friends, such as when he spends a whole day trying to cheer up his teammates after a loss. He strongly dislikes being mocked, especially about the distinctive pink swirl in his red hair, and has a habit of taking matters into his own hands when he sees bad behavior. Despite his tough exterior, he has a kind heart and an easy time sympathizing with others who, like him, struggle with loneliness or low self-esteem. He also has a gullible streak, often believing exaggerated or dramatic stories told by others.
In the story, Chrono is forced to team up with two of his classmates, Tokoha Anjou and Shion Kiba, to compete in a national tournament. Initially, the three constantly bicker and have poor cooperation, but after a series of challenges and shared victories, they form a strong bond and name their team Team TRY3. Chrono's motivation is not solely about winning; he values the passionate feeling of fighting and considers his Gear Chronicle deck to be a friend. He later becomes a key figure in resolving major incidents, including the Stride Gate incident, where he confronts Ryuzu Myoujin and his organization, the Company, to protect the future of Vanguard. After Team TRY3 disbands, Chrono forms a new team called Team Striders with Taiyou Asukawa and Kazuma Shouji. He also enrolls as a first-year student at Harumi High School and works part-time at Card Capital 2 as the Generation Master, a role in which he fights challengers.
Several key relationships define Chrono's journey. Kamui Katsuragi serves as his mentor, introducing him to the game and helping him grow as a fighter. His rival and later ally is Kouji Ibuki, a mysterious and powerful fighter who initially crushes Chrono in a fight and is later revealed to be the one who sent him the Gear Chronicle deck. Chrono’s relationship with his teammates, Tokoha and Shion, evolves from annoyance and rivalry to deep friendship, with Chrono willing to go to great lengths to support them. He also forms a unique bond with Chrono Dran, a unit that manifests from a special card known as a Depend Card and becomes his partner.
As a cardfighter, Chrono possesses several notable abilities. He has a strong imagination, which is considered a valuable skill in Vanguard for visualizing the battles on the planet Cray. He also displays an uncanny amount of luck, able to successfully activate powerful and highly improbable skills on his first try, which is suggested to be less about chance and more about his will altering fate in his favor. Furthermore, Chrono has incredible athletic ability and is surprisingly skilled at domestic chores, such as cooking and cleaning, a necessity from his years of being left to take care of himself. Over time, he grows taller and develops a more confident demeanor, with his appearance and skills solidifying his place as a legendary cardfighter who continues to seek the world he truly desires with each battle.
