Description
Kaito Kirishima is the main protagonist of the story and a fifteen-year-old first-year high school student attending Komoro Academy who wears glasses. He lives with his older sister, Nanami, in an old house after the passing of both of his parents. His birthday is March 29. Kaito stands 158 centimeters tall and weighs 49 kilograms, with blood type O. His most treasured possession and primary hobby is filming with his late grandfather's old 8mm camera, a Fujica Single 8 P300, a pursuit that has led some of his peers to call him "the director".

Kaito has a tendency to daydream, which sometimes leads to trouble when he inadvertently expresses his thoughts or actions out loud. He is fundamentally honest and loyal to his friends, but he is also quite shy about romance and has very low self-esteem, making him oblivious to the affections of others, particularly Kanna Tanigawa. This lack of confidence often means he only takes things seriously when pushed to his limits, and his oblivious behavior can cause frustration for those around him. His frequent daydreams often involve him having conversations with Ichika, which he sometimes voices aloud, leading to embarrassing misunderstandings. Despite his timid nature, he possesses a sincere desire to connect with others, though he has also shown a tendency to avoid connections out of a fear of being hurt.

The story begins when Kaito is out testing his camera one night and witnesses a mysterious bright light descending from the sky. He is caught in a subsequent explosion and seriously injured, but he wakes up the next morning in his room with no memory of the event and no injuries. The same day, a new transfer student named Ichika Takatsuki arrives at his school. Unbeknownst to Kaito, she is the one who saved him. Following their encounter, Kaito begins to experience mysterious health issues that Ichika seems to be able to heal. When he learns she has nowhere to live, he invites her to stay at his house, where she becomes his roommate.

Kaito's role in the story is central, as his passion for filmmaking becomes the catalyst that brings his group of friends together to create a movie over the summer. By chance, he becomes Ichika's co-star in their film production, which leads to an increase in both personal and professional interactions with her. Motivated by the desire to make the movie and navigate the burgeoning romantic tensions within his friend group, Kaito is pushed to confront his own fears and insecurities. With encouragement from the mysterious Remon Yamano and others, he finds the courage to confess his feelings to Ichika, and they begin a romantic relationship.

Kaito's key relationships drive his development. His bond with his older sister Nanami is strong and supportive, as she is often away on business, leaving him to manage the household. He develops deep romantic feelings for Ichika Takatsuki, the alien who saved his life, and her presence in his home is the primary catalyst for his emotional growth. He shares a complex history with his childhood friend, Kanna Tanigawa, who harbors unrequited feelings for him. Kaito is initially insensitive to her emotions, and a significant part of his journey involves realizing the pain his actions have caused her. His best friend is Tetsuro Ishigaki, a more outgoing and handsome classmate, and their friendship anchors the group. Remon Yamano acts as an advisor and playful manipulator, often pushing Kaito toward decisive action regarding his romantic life.

Throughout the narrative, Kaito undergoes significant emotional development. He eventually realizes Kanna's true feelings for him and becomes aware of how his insensitive actions have hurt her. This leads to a period of self-destructive guilt that puts the film production in jeopardy. However, after confronting his own emotions, he resolves to stop avoiding connections with others out of fear of being hurt. When a search party from Ichika's homeworld arrives, Kaito experiences a major transformation, gathering the strength to give Kanna a proper, honest response to her feelings, much to the surprise of his friends. In the end, he properly sees off Ichika when she must return to her home planet, having matured significantly from the shy, self-doubting boy he was at the beginning. The film they all worked on is successfully completed, and it continues to be screened even after their graduation.

Kaito's most notable ability is his artistic skill in filmmaking. He is passionate about creating movies using the old 8mm camera he inherited from his grandfather, and this talent serves as the principal activity and narrative framework for the group's summer vacation.
