Description
Ikuya Kirishima is a central character from the High Speed! storyline, recognized by his distinctive deep green hair and red eyes. His birthday is March 3rd. As a competitive swimmer, his primary specialty is the breaststroke, though in later years he also competes in the individual medley, demonstrating a versatile athletic foundation.

Personality-wise, Ikuya is emotionally rich and sensitive, though he struggles to express his feelings openly, often coming across as reserved or blunt. This difficulty with emotional honesty is coupled with a strong sense of determination. He holds fierce perfectionist tendencies and pushes himself relentlessly in training, sometimes to the point of oxygen deprivation, as he believes swimming and competition are things to be mastered. This intense drive is contrasted by a fragile physical condition; he has a fear of water resulting from nearly drowning on several occasions, yet he refuses to let this hold him back. His approach to the sport is notably different from a free-spirited swimmer; for Ikuya, water is often depicted as an enemy that binds him.

His background and primary motivations are deeply rooted in his relationship with his older brother, Natsuya Kirishima. As a child, Ikuya was very dependent on and close to Natsuya. However, as they grew older, Natsuya deliberately created emotional distance in an effort to force Ikuya to become mentally independent and self-sufficient. This was a traumatic experience for the emotionally fragile Ikuya, who perceived this distance as a rejection. Consequently, much of his swimming career began as an attempt to regain his brother's attention and approval.

During his first year of middle school at Iwatobi Junior High, his brother was the captain of the swim club. Although initially hesitant to join, he was brought into the team alongside fellow first-years Haruka Nanase, Makoto Tachibana, and Asahi Shiina. Initially withdrawn and preferring to swim alone, Ikuya found himself clashing with the more boisterous Asahi but also developing a deep respect for Haruka. He began to idolize Haruka, imitating his habits and swimming style, and the two formed a significant bond, even making a pinky promise to race each other one day. Being part of this relay team helped Ikuya begin to heal, allowing him to feel camaraderie and belonging for the first time since his rift with his brother.

Tragically, this period of growth was short-lived. The middle school team fell apart following the summer, a disbandment that deeply wounded Ikuya. Shortly after, he followed his brother to the United States to attend high school. It was only later, when he returned to Japan for university and joined the Shimogami University swim team alongside his friend Hiyori Tono, that Ikuya was finally able to confront his past weaknesses, make amends with his former teammates, and achieve a true reconciliation with his brother Natsuya.
